Familiar foes Jo-Wilfried Tsonga and Alexandr Dolgpolov will meet again on Saturday in Metz. A spot in the final of the fall swing's first indoor tournament is at stake.
Jo-Wilfried Tsonga and Alexandr Dolgopolov will be squaring off for the fourth time in their careers when they do battle in the semifinals of the Moselle Open on Saturday.
If their previous three encounters are any indication, the French fans are in for a great one. Tsonga survived their first meeting 6-4, 6-4, 6-7(5), 5-7, 10-8 last summer at Wimbledon. This year, however, Dolgopolov has come out on top with two tense victories; 3-6, 6-3, 3-6, 6-1, 6-1 at the Australian Open and 6-7(2), 6-4, 7-5 at the Masters event in Miami.
Current form also suggests another blockbuster match is in the cards. Tsonga, ranked 10th in the world, is 39-18 for the season and he recently advanced to the U.S. Open quarterfinals. So far in Metz the top seed has taken out Mathieu Rodrigues and Nicolas Mahut--the latter 7-5 in the third set.
Dolgopolov also enjoyed success in New York, reaching the fourth round before succumbing to eventual champion Novak Djokovic. The 22-year-old Ukrainian, an Australian Open quarterfinalist, is 34-22 for his 2011 campaign following wins this week over Marcos Baghdatis and Xavier Malisse.
A talented player who can deliver brilliance at any moment, Dolgopolov is clearly capable of pulling off what would be a minor upset. Tsonga, though, is playing at home and is extremely dangerous on indoor hard courts. Following a real scare on Friday, look for Tsonga to turn in a strong performance and hold off Dolgopolov in three sets.
