    (2) Florian Mayer vs. Carlos Berlocq

World No. 24 Florian Mayer makes his return to competition following a third-round finish at the US Open. The 27-year-old German is 34-22 for the season, having advanced to the quarterfinal or better in eight tournaments. He looks to win his first match in Bucharest since 2006.

World No. 71 Carlos Berlocq defeated Andreas Haider-Maurer in the first round, 6-2, 6-1. The 28-year-old is bidding for his second tour-level quarterfinal of the season.

    (3) Marcel Granollers vs. Filippo Volandri

Granollers is 21-20 for the year after reaching round three at the US Open. The 25-year-old Spaniard is set to defend semifinal points in Bucharest, having made the final four last season.

Volandri dismissed Rui Machado in the opening round, 6-3, 6-3. The veteran Italian looks to make his first tour-level quarter since late April, when he secured a semifinal berth in Belgrade.
