  • Tsonga, Mahut set for all-French affairs

    9/21/11 10:57 PM | Ricky Dimon
Tsonga, Mahut set for all-French affairs Jo-Wilfried Tsonga will kick off his Metz campaign on Thursday, while Nicolas Mahut is also in action. They are set for respective all-French meetings with Mathieu Rodrigues and Arnaud Clement.

    (1) Jo-Wilfried Tsonga vs. (Q) Mathieu Rodrigues

What a week it has already been for Rodrigues, but now it is Tsonga who stands in the underdog's way of a quarterfinal spot at the Moselle Open. Thursday will mark, of course, the first-ever ATP meeting between the two Frenchman. After all, Rodrigues had never played a single ATP main-draw match in his entire career prior to his arrival in Metz. The world No. 275, though, took out Mischa Zverev in the final qualifying round then upset Mikhail Kukushkin on Tuesday.

Tsonga is making a quick return to action following a Davis Cup appearance last weekend in Cordoba, Spain. The 10th-ranked Frenchman won the doubles point but then got blown out by Rafael Nadal to end the quarterfinal tie. Still, Tsonga is in fine form with 37-18 record this season and he recently advanced to the U.S. Open quarterfinals. Count on Tsonga dominating his countryman in straight sets.

Nicolas Mahut vs. (WC) Arnaud Clement

Clement has already taken out one fellow Frenchman and occasional doubles partner, and now he gets a chance to do it again. The 33-year-old upset No. 5 seed Michael Llodra 6-3, 6-4 during first-round action on Wednesday afternoon. Clement, toiling down at No. 172 in the world, is now 6-9 at the ATP level for his 2011 campaign.

Next up for Clement is Mahut, and while Clement is now 4-0 lifetime against Llodra, he is 0-3 in his career against one of Wimbledon's marathon men. They have never faced each other on a hard court, but Mahut won their most recent encounter in four sets at the All-England Club in 2007. Mahut registers at 92nd in the rankings and he is a decent 8-9 at the ATP level this season after rolling over Diego Junqueira in straight sets on Tuesday. This could go either way, but Clement in three sets is the pick.
