  • Dolgopolov takes on Baghdatis at Moselle Open

    9/20/11 10:25 PM | Ricky Dimon
Dolgopolov takes on Baghdatis at Moselle Open Alexandr Dolgopolov will battle Marcos Baghdatis for a quarterfinal spot on Wednesday in Metz. Michael Llodra and Arnaud Clement are also in action.

    (3) Alexandr Dolgopolov vs. Marcos Baghdatis

Dolgopolov and Baghdatis will be going head-to-head for the third time in their careers at the ATP level when they clash in the Moselle Open second round on Wednesday. They faced each other twice during the fall season last year; Dolgopolov won 6-4, 6-4 in Beijing before Baghdatis got revenge with a 6-2, 7-6(7) victory in Moscow.

Current form favors Dolgopolov, who is up to No. 20 in the world and seeded third in Metz. The 22-year-old Ukrainian is coming off a fourth-round appearance at the U.S. Open. Baghdatis did not have a summer to remember, but he opened this week with a straight-set dismissal of Matthias Bachinger. The veteran Cypriot should have a slight surface advantage on indoor hard courts, but Dolgopolov in three sets is the pick.

(WC) Arnaud Clement vs. (5) Michael Llodra

Clement and Llodra will be squaring off for the fourth time in their careers on Wednesday in Metz. Somewhat surprisingly, the head-to-head series between these occasional doubles partners stands at 3-0 in Clement's favor. They have not faced each other since a 2006 showdown in Lyon, where Clement survived in a third-set tiebreaker.

Llodra is a clear favorite on paper in this veteran matchup, as he comes in at No. 34 in the world even at 31 years old. The No. 5 seed is an even 17-17 for his 2011 campaign after a second-round showing in New York. Clement is 33 years old and struggling down at No. 172 in the rankings. He should have some confidence following a runner-up finish at a Challenger event two weeks ago, but look for Llodra to get the job done in three sets.
