Gilles Muller and Philipp Petzschner will do battle in a marquee first-round matchup in Metz on Monday. Marcos Baghdatis and Matthias Bachinger are also in action.
(8) Gilles Muller vs. Philipp Petzschner
Muller and Petzschner will be going head-to-head for the first time in their careers at the ATP level when they clash in the opening round of the Moselle Open on Monday evening. They faced each other once on the Challenger circuit in 2007, when Petzschner took a hard-court encounter 6-3, 6-4. The 65th-ranked German, owner of a 21-18 record in 2011, has been decent this season and he is coming off a second-round loss to Janko Tipsarevic at the U.S. Open.
As usual, Muller made headlines from almost nowhere at the U.S. Open. The 49th-ranked Luxembourgian, a quarterfinalist at the year's final Grand Slam in 2008, advanced to the fourth round before falling to Rafael Nadal. Muller, who reached the Atlanta quarterfinals but did little else prior to the Open, is now 13-8 for the season. Petzschner has a shot because this is indoors, but Muller in three sets is the pick based on current form.
Matthias Bachinger vs. Marcos Baghdatis
Bachinger and Baghdatis are set for their second career meeting but first in four years as they prepare to take the court in Metz. Their only previous clash came on the clay courts of Munich in 2007, when Baghdatis prevailed 6-7(7), 6-2, 6-4.
The 60th-ranked Cypriot has to be favored once again, but he is coming off a lackluster hard-court summer. Bachinger has enjoyed plenty of Challenger success this season, but he has won only two ATP matches in 2011 and four in his entire career. The 91st-ranked German lacks experience at this level, so count on Baghdatis advancing in straight sets.
