  • Dimitrov, Mahut in action at Moselle Open

    9/19/11 11:48 PM | Ricky Dimon
Dimitrov, Mahut in action at Moselle Open Grigor Dimitrov and Nicolas Mahut will take the court on Tuesday in Metz. They are set for respective meetings with Igor Sijsling and Diego Junqueira.

    (Q) Igor Sijsling vs. Grigor Dimitrov

Dimitrov will look to continue his breakout season on the ATP Tour when he kicks off his Moselle Open campaign on Tuesday against Sijsling. The 20-year-old Bulgarian has earned 13 of his 20 career ATP match victories in 2011. Dimitrov had the misfortune of playing Gael Monfils in the first round of the U.S. Open, but he made it an extremely entertaining battle despite going down in three sets.

Sijsling has already enjoyed a fine week in Metz having qualified for the main draw. The 148th-ranked Dutchman took out Andre Sa and Michael Ryderstedt, thus giving himself an opportunity to record his first ATP win of the season. Sijsling won a clay-court Challenger title earlier this month, so he is decent form right now. Dimitrov, though, has far more experience at this level and should prevail in straight sets.

    Nicolas Mahut vs. Diego Junqueira

Mahut and Junqueira will also be squaring off for the first time in their careers when they clash in the Metz first round on Tuesday. Junqueira has won only three ATP matches this season and 10 in his career, but he registers inside the Top 100 at No. 96 in the world due to Challenger success. The 30-year-old Argentine advanced one round at the U.S. Open before succumbing to friend and countryman Juan Martin Del Potro.

Another veteran, Mahut is finally looking like himself again after struggling with injuries in the aftermath of his 2010 Wimbledon marathon against John Isner. The 29-year-old Frenchman has won seven ATP matches this year and he also reached the second round in New York before falling to Rafael Nadal. Mahut is playing at home and France and he has a huge advantage over Junqueria on an indoor hard court, so look for the crowd favorite to cruise in straights.
