Andy Murray and John Isner will be playing for the second time in two days when they clash on Friday at the U.S. Open. A place in the semifinals is at stake.
Andy Murray and John Isner will be squaring off for the second time in their careers when they collide in the U.S. Open quarterfinals on Friday. Their only previous encounter came in round four of the 2010 Australian Open, with Murray prevailing 7-6(4), 6-3, 6-2.
Isner, though, is a different player now and he is armed with a ton of momentum. The world No. 22 has compiled a 32-18 record this season and has won 16 of 20 matches on hard courts this summer. Isner captured a title on the grass courts of Newport then finished runner-up in Atlanta before triumphing in Winston-Salem. So far in New York the 6'9'' American has taken out Marcos Baghdatis, Robby Ginepri, Alex Bogomolov, and Gilles Simon.
Like Isner, Murray is also one of the hottest players on tour right now. The Scot's 2011 campaign has been up and down, but at the moment it is all good news for him. Murray won the Cincinnati title (via Novak Djokovic retirement) and has kept up his fine form throughout this fortnight to improve his record for the year to 38-10. The world No. 4 earned a place in the quarters for the first time since 2008 thanks to victories over Somdev Devvarman, Robin Haase, Feliciano Lopez, and Donald Young.
Based on the way these two competitors are performing at the moment, this should be a high-quality encounter. A major question, however, is Isner's stamina. As part of a backed-up bottom half of the draw, the winner could play four matches in five days and they are in the second leg of that stretch at this point. Isner needed three hours and 39 minutes to get past Simon while Murray required only one hour and 59 minutes in rolling over Young.
The underdog will have to serve huge and keep points short in order to make this competitive. Even if that happens, Murray--who feasts on big servers with his strong return and outstanding defensive skills--is not a good matchup for Isner. Count on Murray advancing in no more than four sets.

nadline,
You have a short, and selective memory. Nobody told Rafa to take over 5 hours dispatching Verdasco. Roger beat Roddick in 3 easy sets. As far as the one day of rest versus two days of rest it balances out. In 2010 Murray played first and had two days of rest and Roger only had one day of rest so the scheduling is not always in Roger's favor. Oh and Roger the final won despite the one day of rest too.
numero , 9/9/11 2:29 PM
But I think with the final being on MOnday USO has tried its best so that the bottom half has a rest day before the finals . I am not sure what best they could have done at this moment .
fedexal , 9/9/11 2:44 PM
Nadline, I think Andy's comment had nothing to do with Roger, but more to do with the weather delay affecting one side of the draw more then another. I also don't think there is blatant cheating on behalf of Roger at all, you see what you want to see.
I do however think that certain players get drawn together way too often, like Murray is always drawn with Nadal, and Federer with Djokovic, not matter what there rankings are in respect to their order in the top 4.
rbennett , 9/9/11 3:48 PM
numero, you have a very short memory because at AO 2009, Roger played his SF on Thurs and Rafa played his on Friday for a Sunday final so Roger was expected to have three days rest anyway as opposed to Rafa's 1.
rbennett, Murray was referring to the unfair scheduling when one side of the draw would have had one more day of rest than the other irrespective of the weather. The first thing that Murray complained about on the very first day was that Roger was the only one of the top players who would have a 14 day tournament.
nadline , 9/9/11 4:24 PM
Let's try to be objective. Federer was scheduled for a few night matches and started at 11:50pm, and it could have easily ended at 2am given a normal length match. If that had happened to Nadal there would be no end of gnashing of teeth.
On the other hand, Federer was fortunate to have started play on day 1, not day 2 like Nadal, or day 3 like Murray. And I think he often gets to play first in Slams. So that is some element of favouritism.
However, to claim tournament organizers caused the rain to come and delay the Nadal/Murray half of the draw is silly.
Bharata , 9/9/11 6:16 PM
"Federer was fortunate to have started play on day 1"
Lucky?!?... luck doesn't have anything to do with it Bharata.
And he is a guy who is supposed to defend interests of players...president... lol
zare , 9/9/11 6:32 PM
Luke Jensen having a go at the British media big time, totally stereotypes the British-Scottish dynamic, calls Murray an overachiever, and Henman a massive one. Hmmm.
samprallica , 9/9/11 6:54 PM
Yikes, where r the 4 musketeers? Presume alex is trying to park our little red sports car, mojo busy looking after Bubbles, sosueme still stuck in the Priory...so it's just me then...
Come on Andy!
deuce , 9/9/11 7:02 PM
Just think back to the AO 2009, 2 days rest of Roger and 1 day for Rafa that's why the were all so shocked when inspite of that Rafa won.
nadline, 9/9/11 2:17 PM
Then you changed your mind :
Roger played his SF on Thurs and Rafa played his on Friday for a Sunday final so Roger was expected to have three days rest anyway as opposed to Rafa's 1. nadline, 9/9/11 4:24 PM
nadline AKA the accountant?
Now you can't even count? So Thursday to Sunday counts as 3 days rest and one day later Friday to Sunday counts as 1 day of rest? Now you're contradicting yourself because first you correctly said Roger had 2 days rest then you said he had 3 days.
Are you in charge of propaganda for team Nadal or something? Well you couldn't be because your debating skills stink and now you can't seem to be able to count days two times in a row.
Clearly every year one side has 2 days rest before the AO final and the other side has 1 day of rest. It's random as I've pointed out that in 2010 Roger had the 1 day of rest and Murray had 2.
Stop embarrassing yourself please. :)
numero , 9/9/11 7:07 PM
Isner DOES have game from the back of the court. He shouldn't be stereotyped as a big guy with only a serve.
samprallica , 9/9/11 7:09 PM
Yeah I heard that Sampra,
He also said Murray hits less winners than Nadal Djokovic,
Not true.
Besides being an Idiot Jensen simply CANNOT shut up.
Very poor commentary by a clueless neveracheiver....
In fact i think hes an overacheiver for a terrible commentator.
Glad Ill be back to Sky later..
Sosueme , 9/9/11 7:11 PM
Agreed, I always thought Isner was quite good, one of the best of the 'big serve' bunch
rbennett , 9/9/11 7:12 PM
M Bear is serving better than Isner right now!
Doubt that will last...
Sosueme , 9/9/11 7:18 PM
The strategy from Isner is clear. Go big, go forward or junkball from the back and force Andy to create his own pace. I just wish Murray would stop being unnecessarily negative.
samprallica , 9/9/11 7:20 PM
Tell me about it!
Hes just warming up Sampra!
Break point coming
Sosueme , 9/9/11 7:26 PM
Break. To me, this is progressing like their match at the AO 2010. Murray in straights from here.
samprallica , 9/9/11 7:27 PM
Isner moves well.............for a Tree!
Can he do it for another 3 or 4 sets?
This match is DONE.....
Sosueme , 9/9/11 7:34 PM
Blow me down! Andy serving at 70%...and takes the first set. Come on!
deuce , 9/9/11 7:34 PM
Andy was asked on the BBC if he thought the schedule at the USO was fair and he said that 'fair' doesn't seem to play a part at any tournament. I feel the players have had enough of the smoothing of Roger's path and are now beginning to speak up. Good for them. I'm glad that Rafa has helped to put the cat among the pigeons.
It's been apparent to everyone that there is blatant cheating by tournament organizers on behalf of Roger. Just think back to the AO 2009, 2 days rest of Roger and 1 day for Rafa that's why the were all so shocked when inspite of that Rafa won.
nadline, 9/9/11 2:17 PM
numero, you are the light of reason. well done for putting right a fed hater here. Propaganda is a high-tec word to use and truthful too!
smoothing roger's path? the diaper lady is full of it. rafa's smooth path couldn't come any smoother than not playing even a seeded player here. 68 for muller and nad says she is worried!
more lies and she can't count! and tries to best everyone with rubbish mathematics!
Numero, you are the accountant here and she has embarrassed herself here like you say!
Fleur , 9/9/11 7:38 PM
M Bears starting to coast,
Isner's leaves are starting to wilt,
Right in front of the first lady no less!
Did I actually hear these Bozos compare Andy to Wozniaki?!!
Please!
Do they not realise that both the world No 1 and 2 are at least as defensive in their approach as Andy.
Sosueme , 9/9/11 7:44 PM
With lies being spread about federer, last year?s us open, novak received an extra day?s rest and no comment from the accountant on this? more brown slinging for no reason?
Sienna, read this!
2010Sunday?s rain had given Djokovic an extra day?s rest and recuperation from his exertions of Saturday against Federer, he was still going to be tired. No comment made!
Roger is the watermark for players, a beaconette of reason!
The Hoff needs a bad accountant! zare, jean or nadline could apply!
Fleur , 9/9/11 7:48 PM
Isner looks like he is playing with table tennis racquet... but he is paying price, as movements is slow-mo comparing to Andy... He don't have chances here.
atg , 9/9/11 7:49 PM
@Fleur
GET LOST!
This is an Andy Murray/Isner thread,
Stop importing your squalid, petty rubbish into it!
I don't care for it, or for your embarrassingly childish drivel stinking everything up here,
Take it to one of the Nadal/Federer threads please...
Sosueme , 9/9/11 7:54 PM
@Sosueme ,
Please do not send Fleur there.............we do not want her there either!!!!!
Thank you very much!!
Monalysa , 9/9/11 7:57 PM
@Sosueme!
Tell everyone to abode by rules!
GET LOST BACK champers!
tell nadline to stop important squalid, petty rubbish about roger. I don't care for it either and have a right to embarrass her childish drivel. Tell her to take it to another level!
thank you very much!!!!
thank you numero!
Fleur , 9/9/11 8:02 PM
Sorry Monalysa,
That was thoughtless of me, although Im perplexed why she insists on doing this here.
Perhaps Cheryl should get this demented imbecile her own thread instead (although there's a few others I'd like to send there too). There she can spin her useless illiterate rubbish about Federer & make a complete Idiot of herself in private.
Still,
Thank goodness for anonymity!
Eh Fleur?
Sosueme , 9/9/11 8:15 PM
Sosueme just about to say the same!
Fleur for goodness sake do you have to try and spoil everything. You poor, poor woman.
Yay! " sets to Andy. Brilliant!
deuce , 9/9/11 8:17 PM
2 sets indeedy my sweet,
Very convincing from M bear,
At last!
But it was GAME OVER after the first set,
Isners energy levels are intriguing,
Did he not complete a year long 500 set match
@ last years Wimbledon?
Funny!
Sosueme , 9/9/11 8:23 PM
Somebody's got to take her meds ASAP!
Go Andy! Don't give deuce a chance to use the sofa...we might have a need for it later. :-)
phoenix , 9/9/11 8:23 PM
Fleur, what is ure issue...........really? I mean all the top four guys are playing well. Why cant you just support your guy and allow us to support ours........................respectfully! Only ONE can win at the end of the day and then what will be the point of all the cursing and fighting?!!!
VAMOS!!!!!!!!!
Monalysa , 9/9/11 8:23 PM
sue, thanks indeed for anonymity...i bet even fleur herself would be ashamed to show her posts to her grandchildren...
phoenix , 9/9/11 8:30 PM
a break @ the start for Isner,
Well, it wouldnt be an Andy Murray match without such occurences would it?
Sosueme , 9/9/11 8:31 PM
Oh no! How foolish of Andy fans to relax even for a moment! Sofa!
deuce , 9/9/11 8:36 PM
@phoenix,
Grandchildren?!
The very notion of Fleurs DNA going on beyond her is something i do not want to consider as a possibilty...
Too awful!
Sosueme , 9/9/11 8:37 PM
3-1
M bear is still a bit of a whiney baby Im afraid.
Sosueme , 9/9/11 8:41 PM
Yes, agree Sosueme :( Entirely his fault he's down now. Doubt if Rafa would've taken his boot off Isner's neck.
deuce , 9/9/11 8:47 PM
there's muzz playing incredicbly solid, stable tennis, route 1, 2 sets up no breaks, focused, working towards composed, efficient victory. and I'm thinking, What's going on here, muzz? Winning comfortably and not even one mental walkabout?
No sooner had I thought it ...
alex , 9/9/11 8:48 PM
It's been apparent to everyone that there is blatant cheating by tournament organizers on behalf of Roger. Just think back to the AO 2009, 2 days rest of Roger and 1 day for Rafa that's why the were all so shocked when inspite of that Rafa won.
nadline, 9/9/11 2:17 PM
how did this begin and start sosumhy? why was this referred to in murray match? Think before you blink!
Go Isner!
Fleur , 9/9/11 8:49 PM
4-2 down but I'm still saying muzz in 3 ;)
alex , 9/9/11 8:50 PM
Yes, agree Sosueme :( Entirely his fault he's down now. Doubt if Rafa would've taken his boot off Isner's neck.
deuce, 9/9/11 8:47 PM
Don't mention rafa on murray thread!
what's happening?
Go Isner!
break the bank!
Fleur , 9/9/11 8:51 PM
He won't lose this (I think!!!),
Although Isner is unnecessarily back into this match,
M Bear needs to conserve energy, its not just about winning.
But really he's going to have to grow the f$%k up fast,
Or he can forget it...
Sosueme , 9/9/11 8:52 PM
commentator says, "his composure is so fragile - that's why he'll never win a slam".
Gee, I'm losing count of all the reasons why he'll never win a slam.
alex , 9/9/11 8:54 PM
alex...so it's your fault..;) Aha....
Yep, Sosueme, he's gotta sort this mental thingy out. So frustrating, he's got all the skills...:(
deuce , 9/9/11 8:56 PM
Fleur, you have made an enemy of me Today!
Sosueme , 9/9/11 8:57 PM
I see that Isner will be serving for the first set. I thought this would be over in three.
Nativenewyorker , 9/9/11 8:58 PM
NNY how could it be a straightforward match? Andy is playing after all...
Now Andy, time to re-group and manup!
deuce , 9/9/11 9:02 PM
Set dropped......I hope it STINGS,
Although these kind of lessons never seem to be learned.
Where's Andy Murrays father?
Clearly the Mother is too scared to tell him whats what.
The Father is probably too scared of both of them.
Tsk Tsk.
Sosueme , 9/9/11 9:02 PM
deuce,
Hang in there! Isner seems to be bothered by an ankle or something and Andy is healthy and fitter!
You guys should be the toughest fans of all time!
Nativenewyorker , 9/9/11 9:05 PM
muzz cruising, then first 2 games of 2nd set decides to go for one of his compulsory sleepwalks and throws 4 UFEs (more than entire 2nd set).
Set over.
You get broken by isner, you tend not to break back.
Still no panic, but muzz, get a grip.
alex , 9/9/11 9:05 PM
Isn't it funny how nobody can accept that maybe Isner is a good player too and his good play is what caused Murray's mental lapse and his good play won him the set?
ts38 , 9/9/11 9:06 PM
alex and NNY not panicing...yet..
deuce , 9/9/11 9:07 PM
anyone catch what muzz was whinging about tothe ref there?
alex , 9/9/11 9:08 PM
We're tired of being beaten up by him NNY!
Muttering to himself, inspiring Isner,
I even agree with these Idiots that are commenting now,
So its bad...
Sosueme , 9/9/11 9:08 PM
i agree, deuce is not PANICING. :-)
phoenix , 9/9/11 9:11 PM
seriously now, i'm still certain that this would be over in 4!
phoenix , 9/9/11 9:13 PM
@ts38
John is a very good player &
I would agree with your assessment, if i thought it was true.
The truth of the matter is that Isner's level was raised because he was allowed back into the match.
Simple as that.
Sosueme , 9/9/11 9:14 PM
Should have been over in 3 but its okay..everyone has lapses
Andy will take in 4..Isner seems so lethargic on court.he doesnt even move
sanju , 9/9/11 9:15 PM
muzz losing it on court as he tries to find his game reminds me of me banging around the house trying to find my car keys i lost again. the anger never helps me find them but it passes the time and drives everyone else crazy until I do.
alex , 9/9/11 9:16 PM
It seems as if you break just once in this match,
The set is yours!
Sosueme , 9/9/11 9:19 PM
@Sosueme,
I see what you mean. It looked like the avalanche started during the game in which he broke Murray's serve.
ts38 , 9/9/11 9:22 PM
Lord these commentators, take it we're all listening livehunter?
sorry ts38, Isner is back in the match because Andy did his usual thing and has gone walkabout, down on himself, muttering at his box etc. How many times have we seen this? Serves gone off as well :(
deuce , 9/9/11 9:23 PM
ts38 -
nobody doubts isner is a good player, but this happens frequently with muzz no matter who he's playing - mental walkabouts after good play, 1st serve disappears, UFEs appear everywhere - then he (usually) comes back and wins, but not before his fans think he's gonna lose it. rollercoaster muzz and his hide-behind-the-sofa fans ...
alex , 9/9/11 9:27 PM
Deuce et al.............in all fairness to Andy ALL of the big 4 do it! How do u explain Fed's loss at Wimby and Rafa losing to Nole after winning first set, hence giving Nole all this confidence against him?!! Irritating......i know.......but they all do it!!! Just hope loss of the set will wake him up................and he is allowed to get angry and mumble...............Andy knows he can win this!!!!
Monalysa , 9/9/11 9:29 PM
see, deuce and I are shoutingthe same answers over the sofa at the same time :(
alex , 9/9/11 9:29 PM
At least Andy is holding his serve easy........but just pray that this does not go into a tie-break!!!!
Monalysa , 9/9/11 9:31 PM
deuce -
yep, same channel - see 8:54
alex , 9/9/11 9:34 PM
i can see those 2 bps giving deuce a mild heart attack and sending alex to look for his car keys...well alls well that ends well so far...:-)
phoenix , 9/9/11 9:42 PM
livehunter has crashed and I'm just checking live scores...am a beaten woman I can't take any more...
MonaLysa...I think I love you....;)
deuce , 9/9/11 9:43 PM
@ Deuce......................lol!!!!!
Monalysa , 9/9/11 9:46 PM
nooo Muzz. this match does not need to go to 5 sets!!
stu , 9/9/11 9:51 PM
Murray seems like he's settled and is patiently waiting for the right moment to attack!!
Monalysa , 9/9/11 9:52 PM
Monalysa..just falling deeper each mo......:)
deuce , 9/9/11 9:57 PM
Congrats to Murray and his fans!!!!
Monalysa , 9/9/11 10:04 PM
Well it was expected.... well done Andy... all congrats to crew :)
zare , 9/9/11 10:06 PM
Good match! Props to Isner for playing his heart out, although he choked in the big moment. Murray looks solid, seems like he can up the ante when he needs to and I bet he can do this with great effect against Roddick. Against Nadal - im going to wait and watch.
samprallica , 9/9/11 10:07 PM
The better man won today. Congrats.
ts38 , 9/9/11 10:07 PM
Plucked up courage and watched tie break. Oh Andy, Andy you make us all live on the edge.
Thanx for holding my hand everyone, especially MonaLysa and Phoenix, cos we know he's only your second favourite :)
deuce , 9/9/11 10:08 PM
"Lovely Haircut". :D
samprallica , 9/9/11 10:09 PM
thanx for all congrats.
followed tiebreaker on scoretracker too deuce. then when muzz pulled ahead tired to get online viewing but the thing froze ... grrrr:(
well he's through without a 5th, which would have been disastrous.
but well done isner on a great tourny. despite rankings, i'd have rather face simon which i reckon would have been over in 3 medium sized sets.
alex , 9/9/11 10:16 PM
now can relax and enjoy rafa-rod. another day at the office for rafa, i reckon. he won't want a long one with muzz tomorrow either.
alex , 9/9/11 10:22 PM
alex, how nice to sit back and ENJOY a tennis match, isn't it :)
deuce , 9/9/11 10:31 PM
i was never in doubt that it would be over in 4, but for a moment there my faith wavered and nearly joined deuce at the back...hehe...now it's our turn but it's almost midnight where i am and have work tomorrow, so goodnight everyone.
congrats again to andy and his 4 musketeers...now there are 4 of you? :-)
phoenix , 9/9/11 10:34 PM
"alex, how nice to sit back and ENJOY a tennis match, isn't it :)
deuce, 9/9/11 10:31 PM
When do M bear fans get the chance to do THAT?
Was travelling so avoided anything cardiological,
Thank you other players fans for your kindness,
It's Friday folks!
No need to hold back on the alcohol,
I always need to go for it anyway when i watch the MUZZAY..
