  • Simon, Isner square off in fourth-round showdown

    9/6/11 4:15 PM | Ricky Dimon
Simon, Isner square off in fourth-round showdown A quarterfinal spot will be on the line when Gilles Simon and John Isner collide on Wednesday at the U.S. Open. Isner is bidding for his first-ever Grand Slam quarterfinal.

Gilles Simon and John Isner will be meeting for the first time in their careers when they do battle in the fourth round of the U.S. Open on Tuesday. Simon has never been this far in Flushing Meadows, while Isner has never advanced to a Grand Slam quarterfinal.

It should come as no surprise that these two players are on the verge of a breakout U.S. Open performance, as both have been in outstanding form.

Isner is one of the hottest players on tour at the moment, having compiled a 15-4 record on hard courts this summer. He also won a grass-court title in Newport prior to a runner-up finish in Atlanta, a semifinal showing in Washington, and a title in Winston-Salem. So far in New York the 6'9'' American has taken out Marcos Baghdatis, Robby Ginepri, and Alex Bogomolov.

While Isner is 31-18 for his 2011 campaign, Simon owns a similarly impressive 36-19 record. The 12th-ranked Frenchman triumphed in Hamburg the same week Isner reached the Atlanta final, and he recently progressed to the Cincinnati quarterfinals. Simon booked his place in this showdown thanks to hard-fought victories over Ricardo Mello, Guillermo Garcia-Lopez, and Juan Martin Del Potro.

This one will showcase an interesting contrast in styles; Isner's huge serve and forehand against Simon's defense and consistent baseline play. Simon is often referred to as a human backboard, and that is not a matchup that Isner likes. However, the world No. 22 is in rare form right now and he has the advantage on American hard courts.

Look for Isner to prevail in four high-quality sets.

So who's your pick?

Allez Simon - Sorry, I always root against the giants.

nadline , 9/6/11 7:48 PM

I am with nadline. I am not a fan of the big serving guys. However, I really love watching Simon. I like his deft touch, how he constructs points, his movement and court coverage, how he can deflect the power hitters and just the intelligence he brings to his game.

It's great to see him healthy and playing well. There's not much you can against an ace machine, except try to hold your serve and be sure to capitalize on any break chances.

The only thing Isner and karlovic can do is serve they are servers not tennis players and I dont like their kind of tennis frankly speaking their serve make the match so unfair it is a pain to watch

in fact a better way to describe isner and karlovic is service machines we definitely dont want to see service machines playing against players

tennis2011 , 9/7/11 10:49 PM

clearly some people on the site don't watch much tennis

Isner in 4, as expected!

Karlovic is terrible from the ground, but Isner? I think Isner is great for a guy that tall from the ground. If being tall was such an unfair advantage in tennis, how come these guys havent won slams?

samprallica , 9/8/11 10:17 PM

Poor Simon... you win 6 games in four sets and you loose... :(

zare , 9/8/11 10:44 PM

And then they say karlovic is like Isner?

I am not a fan of Isner but he has far bettergroundstrokes and is more agile then Karlovic. They are not in the same league. But Rafa has a tough time against those players so they will pull out the stuff.

Rafa is playing Roddick next my sweet,
M Bear is taking on Isner

Sosueme , 9/8/11 11:05 PM

That's it. She is lost :) Completely :)

zare , 9/8/11 11:10 PM

It's strange how the Rafa fans don't like big servers, yet they are dieing for him to bring on his 2010 USO big serve to get free points.. If this isn't jealousy then what is? The game begins with a good serve.
