  • Tipsarevic, Ferrero battle for quarterfinal spot

    9/5/11 1:34 PM | Ricky Dimon
Tipsarevic, Ferrero battle for quarterfinal spot A surprising Labor Day matchup in New York pits Janko Tipsarevic against Juan Carlos Ferrero. A quarterfinal spot is at stake.

Janko Tipsarevic and Juan Carlos Ferrero will be squaring off for the third time in their careers and first time in four years when they clash in the fourth round of the U.S. Open on Monday.

Ferrero leads the head-to-head series 2-0, having defeated Tipsarevic twice in Grand Slams. The Spaniard prevailed in five sets at the 2006 Australian Open and in straights at Wimbledon one season later.

Of course, Ferrero is not exactly the same player he was back then now that he is 31 years old. The 2003 U.S. Open runner-up is down at No. 105 in the world, but that is mostly due to injury and he looks poised to surge back up the rankings. On Thursday, Ferrero stunned an in-form Gael Monfils in five entertaining sets after outlasting Pablo Andujar in a first-round five-setter.

Tipsarevic, along with Monfils, has been one of the hottest players on tour this summer. The 20th-ranked Serb reached the Montreal final and his 2011 record is now a lofty 38-17. Following routine wins over Augustin Gensse and Philipp Petzschner, Tipsarevic got a retirement from Tomas Berdych while leading 6-4, 5-0.

Ferrero's upset chances may depend on the surface. If it is still playing as slow as advertised, the underdog has a real shot. Either way, though, Tipsarevic is in rare form right now and he should get the job done in four sets.
