A marquee U.S. Open third-round matchup on Sunday features Juan Martin Del Potro and Gilles Simon. The two players also faced each other in the third round three years ago.
Juan Martin Del Potro and Gilles Simon will be squaring off for the fourth time in their careers when they collide in the third round of the U.S. Open on Sunday afternoon.
Del Potro and Simon also faced each other at this stage in New York three years ago, and to say it did not disappoint would be an understatement. A five-set thriller saw Del Potro prevail 6-4, 6-7, 6-1, 3-6, 6-3.
Their other two encounters were also competitive. Simon earned a 7-6, 6-7, 7-5 win in New Haven four years ago and Del Potro most recently scored a 7-6, 7-6, 7-5 victory in the Wimbledon third round earlier this summer.
Based on current form and past head-to-head history, another close one should be expected. Simon registers up at No. 12 in the world thanks to a 2011 campaign for which he boasts a 35-19 record. The Frenchman recently advanced to the Cincinnati quarterfinals and so far in New York he has taken out Ricardo Mello and Guillermo Garcia-Lopez.
Del Potro recovered from 2010 wrist surgery and wasted no time getting back into stellar shape. The 18th-ranked Argentine has cooled off a bit this summer, but he is still an awesome 40-12 for the season. Del Potro annihilated both Filippo Volandri and Diego Junqueira to book his spot in round three.
This one again pits what should be a thrilling contrast in styles, with Del Potro trying to overpower his opponent while Simon attempts to keep ball after ball in play. Something will have to give, and don't be surprised if it is Simon's consistency making the difference in another five-set contest.

This was a great match again between Delpo and Simon. I love watching Simon's game. Wonderful to see him do what he does best. I love how he was able to counter Delpo's power. He was so calm and fit and strong in the crucial points of the match. As I suspected, Delpo's fitness is just not there. He was really struggling in that fourth set and looked gassed.
I am glad that at least we got to see some of this match in the states. I truly admire Simon's finesse and beautifully constructed points and intelligent play.

Ricky you were right on. I love Delpo but I to see the little guy win once in awhile.
Simon really deserved the win.
