  • Federer faces Cilic in third round

    9/3/11 8:19 AM | Kelli DeMario
Federer faces Cilic in third round World No. 3 Roger Federer will continue his bid for a 17th Grand Slam title, as he squares off against fellow seed Marin Cilic. The players are set to contest their third career meeting Saturday afternoon.

Third seed Roger Federer leads 27th seed Marin Cilic 2-0 in the series, which includes a hard-court victory at the 2008 Masters Series Paris.

Federer has won back-to-back, straight-set matches, having beaten Santiago Giraldo and Dudi Sela earlier in the week. The Swiss is bidding for his 45th victory this season.

With a successful effort Saturday afternoon, the 30-year-old is through to his 11th consecutive US Open round of 16.

World No. 28 Marin Cilic defeated Australian Bernard Tomic in the second round, 6-1, 6-0, 6-2. The 22-year-old looks to record his 33rd victory of the season.

    Prediction: Federer in straight sets.

It may not be as easy as every one thinks Cilic has played well in 1st 2 rounds

Fed has some work to do here,
Cilic is playing very good so far...

textor , 9/3/11 8:48 PM

fed is gonna go

croc , 9/3/11 9:08 PM

if he loses this set,
i can´t see him coming back,
it´s a very tight match,everythings possible...

textor , 9/3/11 9:14 PM

Fed was in mood to break anyway, but that warning was rude...

anatolijs , 9/3/11 9:22 PM

Cilic was broken and now Fed serves for the third set. Cilic has given Fed a match and I thought he was playing well enough to do it.

Okay, Fed is now up two sets to one.

Nativenewyorker , 9/3/11 9:22 PM

I doubt that Maria would give Fed a warning in such a situation, mhm,Fed in control now.

textor , 9/3/11 9:26 PM

Actualy Fed lacks confidence badly.
Every time mach goes tense, his game changes. First time I saw this at US Open final against Delpotro and now much often against big hitters.

anatolijs , 9/3/11 9:30 PM

He has upped his game or Cilic has let go a little....Push on and 4th round is a fact.
But if Cilic does a Haase then Roger is in trouble.

Sienna , 9/3/11 9:43 PM

Well seems like fed did a Haase. I am glad with this hard earned match. It is just what he needed. The beast is alive and hungry.

Sienna , 9/3/11 11:06 PM

Good to see Roger finally gut out this win instead olf folding, ala Tsonga. I hope he has an easier match vs. Haas, which I think he will, to be able to regroup and be ready for Tsonga, or Tispsarevic, who loves to play on Center court and take out a big scalp. C'mon Rog, just do it!

scoretracker , 9/3/11 11:41 PM

I agree Scoretracker. There were many times he was down on his serve and still kept going not shanking and winning the games. It was a good prep for the Tsonga quarter (if both would reach)

Hey I couldn't see the match. What do you mean - did Federer start slicing more, or get less aggressive? Just curious. I saw this sort of things vs Berdych.

Bharata , 9/4/11 1:18 AM

He is playing Monaco in the next I think, who beat Haas.
But this is not a good sign, dropping a set already.

xrf , 9/4/11 9:28 AM

scoretracker, fed plays monaco next who is a sound player, with a tricky game. a clay courter i think?

should he move on from this, he will play either tsonga or fish not tipsarevic.

Sienna I agree with you. Roger Federer is de beste tennisser ooit.

De haters hier zal nooit begrijpen zijn genialiteit.Roger Federer is de beste tennisser ooit. De haters en blinde gelovigen hier zal nooit begrijpen zijn genialiteit

Fed should be more aggressive when he plays, but it is not so easy champers.

Fleur , 9/4/11 11:21 AM

Fleur, your god Fed isn't retired yet? He should, and then we'll all see what happens with you: you retires too or you pick up new player to worship or you limit your comments to hatred towards other top players? What's gonna be?

vjakov , 9/4/11 12:37 PM

no hate vjakov just fact. novak is arrogant dancer. he should stick to tennis. or join the hoff.

Fleur , 9/4/11 1:22 PM

Novak is guaranteed to the semis..no way are his 4th round and qtr final opponents gonna trouble him

Fed is guaranteed to the qtrs..depends on wh he faces in qtrs..Fish or Tsonga..for all you know Tsonga and Fish may tire each other out and that may benefit Fed..THough I still think Fed will beat either Fish or Tsonga as this is best of 5

I so wanna see Fed v/s Djoko semi..power show..and guess what I think Fed will get the better of Djoko is what I think this time again..

sanju , 9/4/11 1:30 PM

Fleur,
Great fun LOL and pretty good.

Hij is niet alleen de beste tennisser. He is also the guy with biggest drive.
He should be more aggressive like the fourth set he was. So maybe he has got the breakthrough. It was a verry good test against a player who was in form and playing a Tsonga kind of game.
