  • Djokovic, Davydenko square off in third-round showdown

    9/3/11 7:54 AM | Ricky Dimon
Djokovic, Davydenko square off in third-round showdown Novak Djokovic has been cruising at the U.S. Open, but it could get tricky for him on Saturday. Up next for the world No. 1 is dangerous veteran Nikolay Davydenko.

And now the tournament actually begins for Novak Djokovic.

Djokovic spent 44 minutes on court against Conor Niland in round one then destroyed Carlos Berlocq 6-0, 6-0, 6-2 on Thursday night. On Saturday, though, former world No. 3 Nikolay Davydenko stands in Djokovic's way of the U.S. Open third round.

Davydenko and Djokovic have face each other six times, with Djokovic leading the head-to-head series 4-2. They most recently clashed earlier this summer in Montreal, where Djokovic overcame a huge first-set deficit to prevail 7-5, 6-1.

Djokovic, of course, went on to win the Montreal title and has not really slowed down despite retiring in the Cincinnati final. The top-ranked Serb is an unbelievable 58-2 for the year following victories this week over Conor Niland and Carlos Berlocq.

Davydenko has been struggling of late, but he could be getting back on track in New York. The 30-year-old Russian ousted No. 32 seed Ivan Dodig in round one then trounced Potito Starace in straight sets on Thursday. Davydenko is now above the .500 mark at 20-19 for his 2011 campaign.

If Davydenko plays like--or at least close to--the Davydenko of old, this could be competitive and will certainly be entertaining. Regardless of the underdog's level, though, Djokovic is looking ruthless and he should get the job done in straight sets.

Djokovic in 2 tight and one straightforward set. Matt Cronin's being absolutely ridiculous saying that Djokovic will be pushed to 5 tonight.

Please dont make me eat my words Nole.

Davy has trouble winning best of 5 matches.

nadline , 9/3/11 4:14 PM

He is fast... and he knows to hit... but still no chance against this Nole.
But it could be... and probably will be quite competitive ....
AJDEEE NOLEEEEE!!!!

zare , 9/3/11 4:56 PM

Davydenko in 2 Bagels and a breadstick.....

JOKING!

Sosueme , 9/3/11 5:20 PM

Nole is never troubled by Davy's game...looking at how Nole is playing at this USO Davy stands no chance and he won't even be able to make it competitive in one or two sets...although I would love to see Davy inspired (at least in the way he has always seemed to be when playing Rafa..lol..), I don't think the old guy is going to do any damage to Nole...

tough match so far Davy is causing some problems

tennis2011 , 9/4/11 4:28 AM

Although davydenko wont win this thing , he is showing what needs to be done , cross court - cross court ,wide margin above net , keep doing till other person errors. If other player off the court try for a winner

nirv02 , 9/4/11 4:29 AM

The Davy of old has enough game to trouble Nole but not this Davy vs this Nole. It should be a straight sets victory for Nole today.

luckystar , 9/4/11 5:18 AM

Haven't watched a single match of this tournament so far. How's he playing?

samprallica , 9/4/11 6:25 AM

Nirv, hush a bit - your favorite player might hear your loud thinking and come to wrong conclusion how to play against E.T. Nole...

vjakov , 9/4/11 6:44 AM

Davy couldn't do much against Nole in this match. He tried to hang with Nole in the baseline rallies, but couldn't get it done.

It's no longer the same Davy, the one of 2009, that we are seeing now. With all his injuries, he's no longer the same. I'm sure the Davy of 2009 will give this Nole a good fight. I like Davy and Marin, though they lost today, I'm still proud of their performances today. It's just that their opponents were too strong for them.

Marin is still too inexperienced, looking forward to his coming into his own some day soon. I hope too that Davy, Nalby and Fish can join Fed as the old guards who still can provide some challenges to the existing top young guns.

I think Cilic has been showing some encouraging signs of getting back some of the great form we saw in the 2009 USO and the 2010 AO. He did well to give Fed a match, get a set off him and got a bad break when he was given a warning for taking too long to serve when he was trying to hold serve. He will have to learn to shake things like that off and keep himself mentally strong.

I think Cilic is going in the right direction and it's nice to see him playing better.

novak is so arrogant. at the end of the match with davydenko he started to dance and looked to the crowd raising his arms to say ' look at me watch me aren't i great!' he's so arrogant.

why did he have to dance in front of the crowd? he should join a band if he wants to dance, go to paris and join the moulin rouge.

silly dance. such an arrogant thing to do after a tennis match. he wants everyone to look at him all the time.

zare, he is arrogant. mr. arrogant.

he should concentrate on tennis not on dancing. he can't dance.

Fleur , 9/4/11 11:36 AM

' look at me watch me aren't i great!'"
"AREN'T I GREAT"
hehehe....well he is :)
Fleur.... I have never saw someone writing posts like yours!
BTW... I have saw ppl stepped in something like your posts... and then start cursing and went to buy new shoes.

zare , 9/4/11 11:47 AM

I lost respect to Djokovic after his last retirement.
Could you imagine the guy from 2dn hundred, quit in such a moment without injury? And now he dances....

anatolijs , 9/4/11 2:07 PM

Anatolijs... you can loose respect to someone... it's your legit right . But how do you know that he was without injury... Fed whispered to you??

zare , 9/4/11 6:10 PM

anatolijs great observation. He is a fallen hero using a drugralted or dope emulator like the pod

Sienna , 9/4/11 6:45 PM

Ricky, Cherryl... are you going to do something with this idiotic doping accusations on TT.
