  • Berdych meets Tipsarevic, Dolgopolov takes on Karlovic

    9/3/11 7:44 AM | Ricky Dimon
Berdych meets Tipsarevic, Dolgopolov takes on Karlovic Two enticing third-round matchups are on Saturday's schedule at the U.S. Open. Tomas Berdych is going up against Janko Tipsarevic while Alexandr Dolgopolov and Ivo Karlovic will see their styles clash.

    (20) Janko Tipsarevic vs. (9) Tomas Berdych

Tipsarevic and Berdych will be going head-to-head for the second time this summer when they do battle in the third round of the U.S. Open on Saturday. They just faced each other in Montreal, where Tipsarevic prevailed 6-4, 6-4. That is the main highlight of what has been an awesome 2011 campaign for the 20th-ranked Serb, who boasts a 37-17 record. So far in Flushing Meadows he has taken out Augustin Gensse and Philipp Petzschner.

Berdych, meanwhile, is in similarly impressive form. After reaching the Montreal quarters, the ninth-ranked Czech made his way to the Cincinnati semifinals. He is 41-17 for the season following straight-set destructions of Romain Jouan and Fabio Fognini. Another minor upset is possible, but Berdych seems to be a slightly different player from the one that was on display in Miami. Look for the No. 9 seed to advance in five sets.

    (22) Alexandr Dolgopolov vs. Ivo Karlovic

Nobody likes to see his name alongside Karlovic in a draw, especially not at Grand Slams. Just ask Fernando Gonzalez and Richard Gasquet, the two players whom Karlovic defeated in rounds one and two of the U.S. Open. The 6'10'' Croat has been plagued by injuries, but he went into New York having played solid tennis this summer and it is only full steam ahead for Karlovic.

Up next for the world No. 94 is a first-ever encounter with Dolgopolov. The Ukrainian is in the midst of a breakout year on tour, even though his hard-court summer lacks brilliance. Dolgopolov, who lost to Robin Haase in Winston-Salem, has taken advantage of a fine draw to reach the third round. After dismissing Frederico Gil, he needed five sets to get past Flavio Cipolla on Thursday. Karlovic's serve has been on fire, so look for him to score a four-set victory.
