Defending champion Rafael Nadal will take on Nicolas Mahut of France as he eyes a third round spot.
Rafael Nadal hasn’t been at his best this summer. The No. 2 seed lost his first match in Montreal and went out in the quarterfinals of Cincinnati to American Mardy Fish.
Nadal had a rusty opening round match against Andrey Golubev, though he managed to fight his way to a straight-set win.
His second round opponent is the big-serving Frenchman Nicolas Mahut, known for being the losing part of the longest match ever played at Wimbledon with John Isner. Mahut has the sort of game that can be frustrating when he’s playing well.
The Frenchman has a big first serve and he keeps points short by rushing the net at every opportunity. Nadal has a fine passing shot, but Mahut is not going to give the Spaniard the sort of rhythm he likes early in a tournament.
Mahut actually owns a 1-0 lifetime edge over Nadal; their other meeting came on the grass courts of the Queen’s Club back in 2007.
Prediction – Even if Mahut serves well, Nadal should find his way into the third round.

jaynadal , 9/2/11 11:44 PM
Rafa is doing well today, hope he keeps it up.
nadline , 9/2/11 11:53 PM
See luckystar, Rafa heard you, he is playing more aggressive today and really going for his shots.
nadline , 9/2/11 11:59 PM
This is turning into a practice session for Rafa. Would like to have seen him pushed a bit harder (not too hard mind you) so he gets into his stride.
ed251137 , 9/3/11 12:00 AM
...and he is playing better and better !!!
zare , 9/3/11 12:00 AM
Mahut has thrown in the towel.
nadline , 9/3/11 12:02 AM
...done and dusted... Mahut retired !
zare , 9/3/11 12:03 AM
Rafa made 24 winners and 5 unforced errors. He was very impressive today I feel better about his game now.
Vamos Rafa!
nadline , 9/3/11 12:05 AM
It looks like Nalby will be Rafa's next opponent he is leading Ljubicic 5-1 in the 4th and two sets to one up.
nadline , 9/3/11 12:08 AM
Mahut was struggling with an abdominal injury and called the trainer. Then he tried to continue but just couldn't do it.
From what I saw of Rafa, he looked much better today, although it was clear that Mahut couldn't do much. He got a nice workout anyway.
So it appears to be Nalby. The problem with guys like Golubev and Mahut is that they don't give you any rhythm. However, it seems that Rafa has his legs under him and is much sharper. Nice to see!
Nativenewyorker , 9/3/11 12:13 AM
Good to see Rafa's shots doing more damage.
I think Mahut was injured even before the match started - he was stretching his back in a weird way when warming up.
Nalbaldian is for sure a much more indicative test, vamos Rafa!!
Shireling , 9/3/11 12:19 AM
Good job, Rafa! I just love the way he played today...and the next opponent is the guy I really happen to like. Nalby is one of my favorites beside Rafa and I love watching him play...I just hope he will not give my Rafa a hard time given that they were training together :))...again, very nice performance today, Rafa! Those passing shots were magnificent! VAMOOOOOOOS RAFA!!!
natashao , 9/3/11 12:19 AM
huh. Well, that was anti-climatic.
cherylmurray , 9/3/11 12:20 AM
Poor Mahut seems be be having a bad run at the slams of late.
scoretracker , 9/3/11 3:25 AM
Didn't get to watch the whole match but only some of it. Rafa looked sharp today, good for him. Nalby is a tough customer so Rafa's hands will be full, and if he gets pass Nalby, guess what, who will, most likely, be waiting for him next? Muller of course! So Rafa better gets ready and plays better and better each match. I know he can.
luckystar , 9/3/11 3:28 AM
lucky,
I see that Muller beat Gulbis. Melzer was taken out by this guy Kunitzen. So I assume you expect Muller to beat Kunitzen.
I think Rafa will be ready for Nalby. He has had too many tough matches to take anything for granted. However, I don't see Nalby having the stamina to stay with Rafa in a best three out of five set match. Rafa has to try and wear him down. Needless to say, he will have to be on his toes for this one.
Rafa seems to rise to the occasion when he has a potentially tough opponent. I have confidence that he will be ready for Nalby.
Nativenewyorker , 9/3/11 5:02 AM
I don't think I've ever seen Nalby in such good shape. He looks to have dropped alot of weight. One thing for sure, they know each other's game. This should be a good test for Rafa, and I hope that's all it is. Does anybody know why ESPN3 or Tennis Channel couldn't offer even 5 minutes of Rafa's game today. Here's the standing USO champion on Ash, and we couldn't even get 5 minutes. Am seriously considering throwing in the towel on the sports channel (tennis channel) and just upgrading my live streaming status. Anyone know of a good alternative to Sports Channel.
Maya , 9/3/11 6:30 AM
Maya, here in UK, if you haven't got Sky, you have to rely on streaming. Have you tried "livehunter"? The quality is good but the ads are dreadful ;)
deuce , 9/3/11 8:14 AM
Rafa used to be nervous about playing Nalby but I think he's now broken the mould and will be ready for him. I didn't see the match with Ljubicic because all the tennis was on interactive yesterday on SKY including Murray's because of football so it wasn't easy to just switch from match to match.
Rafa played aggressive yesterday if he keeps it up he'll just get better and better.
nadline , 9/3/11 8:27 AM
Over a best of five sets match, I don't think Nalby can live with Rafa, unless Rafa plays very badly. I doubt Rafa will play badly in a third round match of a slam. I'm happy Rafa has a chance to meet and beat Mahut, that even the H2H to 1:1. There are now only two guys having positive H2H against Rafa and I hope Rafa will have a chance to meet and beat them to get the H2Hin his favor. So proud of Rafa, that he maintains a positive H2H over all the top ten players. Can't say the same for the other top four guys.
Vamos Rafa! Please do your best here to defend your title, and hopefully get ready to regain the no.1 position in the future and win more slams.

Maya: I have recently subscribed to Eurosport Player. I'm in France and paid an annual sub of around 20? or you can subscribe month by month for 4.95?. It's excellent quality and has the full screen capacity. They feature every court which has TV coverage and it's dead easy to switch from court to court. On the outside courts you get full sound but quite often no commentary (a blessing quite usually!). It also has two mini split screens but so small its impossible to see them so I use Livehunter if I want to follow more than one match at the same time but like Deuce says the ads are the pits.
ed251137 , 9/3/11 9:44 AM
I remember watching Rafa play Mahut at Queens in 2007 when Mahut won, Rafa just wasn't pushing too hard after his long clay season, even so, the match was two close sets. Rafa just wanted his feel on grass as usual so that he could have some rest before Wimbledon.
I saw the fiesty confident Rafa yesterday and that gave me hope that he is getting his mental mindset back.
nadline , 9/3/11 10:57 AM
Huge improvement in every department including that all important body language.
ed251137 , 9/3/11 11:24 AM
Maya: Correction. Have just checked and it is 40 euros (not 20) for an annual Eurosport Player subscription. Good value at a few cents per week for the quality of transmission and image.
ed251137 , 9/3/11 1:55 PM
Does anybody know why ESPN3 or Tennis Channel couldn't offer even 5 minutes of Rafa's game today. Maya, 9/3/11 6:30 AM
The answer is clear : The American players are doing well this year so ESPN and the Tennis Channel are showing their home players. Besides who would want to watch Rafa play (against a clearly injured player) when they could watch Donald Young (in a competitive match) ?
Since you're watching Tennis Channel and ESPN3 online you are in the good old U S of A! The others who are recommending European subscriptions to you don't realise that. I'm a Fedfan and I'm not complaining about all the American players' matches being on. Be a little patriotic!
