9/2/11 6:43 AM | Ricky Dimon
Andy Murray's U.S. Open campaign resumes on Friday against Robin Haase. The showdown pits two of the hotter players on tour in an early-round clash.
Andy Murray and Robin Haase will be going head-to-head for the second time in their careers when they do battle in round two of the U.S. Open on Friday. Their only previous encounter came three years ago in Rotterdam, where Haase--with home-court advantage--pulled off a 7-5, 6-3 upset.
Murray, of course, is a much different player now. The Scot is up to No. 4 in the world and his back-and-forth 2011 campaign is on the positive side at the moment. After an early exit in Montreal, Murray rebounded to capture the Cincinnati title. He won the first set against world No. 1 Novak Djokovic before the Serb retired with a shoulder problem.
Like Murray, Haase is also in stellar form right now. The 41st-ranked Dutchman sports a 25-20 record this season and he has won eight of his last 10 matches. This stretch includes a title in Kitzbuhel and a semifinal performance last week in Winston-Salem.
Both men kicked off their stays in Flushing Meadows with convincing performances. Murray survived a tough first set before dismissing Somdev Devvarman in straights, while Haase thrashed Rui Machado.
An upset is not entirely out of the question simply because Haase is producing great tennis and Murray has been hit or miss this year. A high-quality encounter should be expected, with Murray in four the likely result.

Agree with Ricky. Expect Haase to take the first set, especially as Andy seems to start slowly. Then WHAM!
Come on you red destroyer!
deuce , 9/2/11 11:33 AM
But 2flow we could hope for a dutch surprise! We have waited long enough and he certainly ready to take his first Top 10 scalp.
But AM did look veryu good in set 2/3 and his "mole" is getting larger and larger.f
Sienna , 9/2/11 1:49 PM
Sienna, it wouldn't be his first top 10 scalp. He's got 2: Murray (nr 8) and Berdych (nr 10)
zit jij toevallig ook op tennisactueel trouwens? :P
2flow , 9/2/11 2:40 PM
Bonker , 9/2/11 3:42 PM

ahtung shtrase, bite, spricen, schvaine :)
anatolijs , 9/2/11 4:21 PM
After I saw Haase take Nadal to 5 sets at Wimbledon 2010 I though he looked like he could be a top 20 player, definately has the game for it. Any theories on why he isn't yet? I reckon its probably just a mental thing hmmm...
rbennett , 9/2/11 4:24 PM
@rbennett,
Well he won't need to ask Andy any tips on how to improve his mentality,
As he doesn't have any it seems (apart from crazed smirking maybe instead of shouting)!
Unfortunately..
Sosueme , 9/2/11 4:35 PM
Gosh Sosueme, didn't know u felt so strongly about Vermeer! For goodness sake it's only art....
rbennett, RH said that he started playing tennis much later than Andy, why Andy is ranked so much higher than him. Didn't really endear him to me, that remark. You make your choices and live with the consequences. Think he's definitely top 20 though.
deuce , 9/2/11 5:28 PM
@bonker @ Sienna
Ek praat afrikaans,so ek vertaan die hollands so bietjie en julle.
Lobo , 9/2/11 5:29 PM
De aanleiding waarom jijn nederlands praat en verstaat is natuurlijk niet zo grappig, maar het blijft leuk zuid afrinanen afrikaans te horen spreken.
Btw about Haase and his mentality. Every player who comes back after such a long and painfull injury (twice) like Haase had, must have a top 10 mentalstate.
But I concur that his ret against Fish and the choke against Benetau were not because of the greatest mental powers. But for his defence against Fish he felt like his body was weary and that the same injury might return when he played on. So if he thinks like that he was good to retire. It is not like he was #1 in the world.
A player out as long as Haase will do wel if he returns within a year/ Look at DelP look at Nadal who only was out for a few weeks and he could not return to his old level for almost a year. So I think he is a great mental state only in the beginning of the year hehad some bad results where everybody in the Netherlands were expecting Haase and DeBakker two make a surge for top 30. DB is gone but Haase as every chance on breaking in the top25. He is beating those guy regurlarlythe last month or two. WIth the second round and the semi last week, he almost defended his points won last year with his last 2 challenger wins.
So HAASE GO FOR IT. YOU HAVE THE EDGE H2H is in your favor as that is the big thing on TT!!
Sienna , 9/2/11 5:49 PM
I thought this is English speaking site?????
zare , 9/2/11 6:14 PM
@Sienna ons hoop dat Fed vir Rafa wen en dan word dit die Federer/novak era.
It's a bit difficult to read but when you can listen to it we can understand.
Lobo , 9/2/11 8:28 PM
A close one I think. Andy M will start slowly as always, me, I`ll be hiding behind my sofa!
mojo , 9/2/11 8:36 PM
C'MON DONALD!!!!!! 5,9% BELIEVES IN YOU!!!!!!!!!!
zare , 9/2/11 8:39 PM
@Sienna ons hoop dat Fed vir Rafa wen en dan word dit die Federer/novak era.
It's a bit difficult to read but when you can listen to it we can understand...."
Actually if you speak German and English, Dutch is surprisingly easy to read,
Listening to Dutch is another thing entirely however!
Sosueme , 9/2/11 8:59 PM
Awful start as Andy gives Robin a free gift of the first set :( He must win the second or it's bye bye USOpen.
And it's behind the sofa time for his fans :(
deuce , 9/2/11 10:36 PM
Ooops, Andy just lost the first set. Lots of surprising losses today it seems..................Sharapova just lost to Pennetta..............seemed Donald Young was going to beat Wawa but things have turned around for Wawa!
Monalysa , 9/2/11 10:36 PM
Whats with Andy and this Haas guy?! Andy just got broken AGAIN.............geeze!!!
Monalysa , 9/2/11 10:41 PM
............and AGAIN!!!!!
Monalysa , 9/2/11 10:57 PM
Donald from the poll just did it!!! Wawa goes home !
Well adding young Donald was really cheery on top of cream!
GO YOUNG GO!!!!
zare , 9/2/11 11:22 PM
Zare - being in the TT poll is clearly good karma!
Muzza looks positively miserable. Dreadful match.
cherylmurray , 9/2/11 11:27 PM
I think Deuce forgot to give Andy his alarm call this morning. He has only just woken up.
ed251137 , 9/2/11 11:30 PM
Who are the Eurosport commentators? They are openly routing for Haase.
ed251137 , 9/2/11 11:38 PM
MTO Haase/ No way!!
@Sosueme
Well I once said you dont have a sense of humour. I am wrong this is the second time you made me laugh.
Of course German, english , dutch are strongly related (Germaans_
Sienna , 9/2/11 11:39 PM
ed thought new diet was meant to make Andy more lively in the mornings! How can he have given away that first set? Idiot! Serve let him down again.
deuce , 9/2/11 11:46 PM
...and Muzza... finally awaken is turning the match...
Did anyone heard why Haase called trainer ?
zare , 9/2/11 11:50 PM
Murray will take the match in the end, Haase can't keep it up over 5 sets.
nadline , 9/2/11 11:55 PM
...double break... nice play Andy.... Haase is melting... just booked his card for Loosevile....
GO ANDY.... TIME TO RAISE !!!!
zare , 9/2/11 11:59 PM
M Bear appears to be stirring,
Wow oh to not have these roller coaster rides
Sienna darling I thought the Cow was going to !?,! The bunny there,
As your boy had certainly risen to the occasion....
It may not be happening now...
Sosueme , 9/3/11 12:02 AM

Oh my, that forehand up the line is why I call myself an Muzzy fan,
Unbelievable!

Sienna , 9/3/11 12:37 AM

Sienna , 9/3/11 12:39 AM
Can we please serve it OUT now M Bear?
Sosueme , 9/3/11 12:42 AM
INCREDIBLE
Sienna , 9/3/11 12:49 AM
that was entertaining...
Sienna , 9/3/11 12:51 AM
What a set! Andy was lucky this time :) it's never over till match point is won.
Must say that Haase really promises to be great player.
zare , 9/3/11 12:54 AM
Unbelievable,
Just...
Commiserations to you Sienna, although your boy did you proud,
Onward and upwards for him I would think..
Murray needs to rectify that 2nd serve STAT.
& now it's time for something very alcoholic,
Strewth!
Sosueme , 9/3/11 12:54 AM
zare, so I hear from the Serbian commentators that Murray is going to be Nole's best man at Nole's wedding which will take place in Kosovo where Nole was born and were he originally comes from...just WOW...by the way, congrats to Murray fans for this win...I know exactly what they were going through...lol...
natashao , 9/3/11 12:56 AM
Well it wouldn't be Andy if he didn't shred our nerves! But comms said Haase was unplayable at times so am pleased for darling Andy who held his nerve. Phew is it too late for a stiff drink?
deuce , 9/3/11 12:58 AM
That was a great match. Eyeballing eachother... fistpumping in their faces. Mto to regain composure?
Well all the Nadal stuf as a matter of facts.
Just kidding;-)
Sienna , 9/3/11 12:59 AM
natashao: it's a wind up from somewhere, because Andy is second best ie best man, to Nole.
deuce , 9/3/11 1:00 AM
It's never too late Deucey darling I'm plundering the drinks cabinet myself.
Heard on the radio hat it has been scientifically proven that M Bear fans have greatly curtailed lifespans in comparison to Nadal and Fed fans,
Can't ever think WHY....
Sosueme , 9/3/11 1:01 AM
deuce, you will see it will turn out to be true...Nole was born in Kosovo and I know he is getting married soon...do you think he is having a second thought and may rather decide to ask Fed to be his best man :)
natashao , 9/3/11 1:05 AM
Sosueme, u gotta laugh, but seriously so cross with Andy over first set giveawy in particular but so pleased with him over the last set. Really showed some steel. Haase was in some wild form!
natashao...hmm..;)
deuce , 9/3/11 1:09 AM
I don't care whether Andy is best man at His wedding as long as Novie takes a turn at being the bridesmaid for a change when they (if they) get to the final!
Sosueme , 9/3/11 1:12 AM
sosueme, hahaha...well, Nole will have to give him something...but you know, in Serbia, the custom is for the best man to give presents...:)
natashao , 9/3/11 1:18 AM
Thanks a lot Andy. That aged me 10 years in a matter of hours. As the old nursery rhyme goes: When he's good he's very, very good. But when he's bad he's horrible.
Dangerous customer that Haase. He'll cause a lot of damage if he becomes more consistent.
ed251137 , 9/3/11 1:22 AM
Congrats to Murray and his fans, deuce &sosueme especially. Haase is always a difficult opponent especially on a fast surface; that's why he gave us, Rafa fans, a scare at Wimbledon last year. His problem I think is still his fitness and that's why I think Murray will outlast him over five sets, if Murray decides to wake up and play.
luckystar , 9/3/11 4:01 AM
That was some crazy match for Murray and his fans! Wow! Rafa fans remember all too well his match with Haase at Wimbledon last year. The guy can really cause all sorts of trouble, but always seems to struggle with fitness as lucky said.
That fifth set was insane! You think Murray has it wrapped up at 4-0 and then all of a sudden Haase comes back to life and evens the score!
It's Feli next for Murray. Fasten your seat belts, is all I can say! And have a few drinks tonight to settle the nerves!
Nativenewyorker , 9/3/11 4:48 AM
NNY, not counting chickens but, mixing my metaphors here, am hoping the next one'll be a walk in the park....:)
ed, just the ten? Oh lucky woman ;)
deuce , 9/3/11 8:10 AM
deuce,
For what it's worth, Rafa fans have seen our guys struggle in the early rounds of slams. They say what doesn't kill you, only makes you stronger! :)
You saw Andy jump in the air like Rafa at the end, then you know he realized that he has passed one test! Like I tell myself after wins like this one, who cares how you win as long as you win!
Mix your metaphors, whatever gets you through! :)
Nativenewyorker , 9/3/11 8:18 AM
murray was lucky. why is he always included in top 4?
he is now tired.
he blames everyone (except himself) for tough scheduling though he has had easy tournaments with retirements and walkovers. He blames everyone else for his aches and pains.
He shouldn't be struggling against haase, with his new diet, new fitness regime, new mantras.
Haase should have won. Haase is a better player than people give him credit for. Now too much lactic acid building up in his body.
Get into the egg chamber andy.
He needs to up the andy if he is going to beat rafa.
Fleur , 9/3/11 8:36 AM
'why is he always included in top 4?'
That's what the ranking system is for duckie.
ed251137 , 9/3/11 9:18 AM
Fluer, show more respect for Andy! Unlike your idol, he doesn't give excuses when he loses. Lucky is someone who gets cupcake draw all the time, the most ideal scheduling and rest before a slam finals, and playing nobodies ranked over 1000 in a slam.
jean , 9/3/11 9:24 AM
Congrats to deuce, alex, sosueme.... great match.
Next month weeding...in Serbia? ....not in Kosovo but on Kopaonik mountain... OK thats geographically on border ...
Poor Muzza... if he's going to be best man on Serbian weding :).... he won't be able to play at least two months after :)
I heard that news but I am not sure that everything is true... I WOULD like that to be true... But I must admit... never realized that they are so good friends... coz in Serbia...you love your best man more than brother !
But it will be challenge for Andy... we have a joke about English guy:
"I was drinking with some Russians yesterday... I almost died.
I was drinking with some Serbians today....I wish I have died yesterday..!"
It will be nice to see Muzzy trying to learn KOLO... traditional serbian dance.
At the end... Serbs have 12% of celtic blood :) ...according to DNA genealogy :)
zare , 9/3/11 10:04 AM
jean, show more respect for Andy? You're joking right?
When he complains all the time. He's second to rafa in the complaining department. Injuries? Stressed out? He wants to put his dummy back in. Baby.
Who has just complained about everyone else's scheduling but his? see what he has said on official ATP.
Did you see his cupcake at wimbledon this year? Pushover. Like Rafa's. All the time these two get easy draws and complain.
Lucky is rafa. Have you seen his draw the last two slams? It's all a fix. It's a fix.
Andy complains. He should not be mentioned as the top four. Not a hint of it. Should be Haase who is talked about more. A great under-rated player.
The ranking duckie does not mean that Andy should be spoken in the same class as the others ahead of him. He hasn't won a slam so shouldnt be mentioned in the same breath, duckie.
Fleur , 9/3/11 11:33 AM
"He's an unbelievable tennis player. He plays like a chess player. He plays the game really smart. He's fit and athletic. He's so good at everything." Haase on Murray.
deuce , 9/3/11 3:20 PM
@Fleur
The reason he complained about his scheduling dear is because he has to complete the USO in 12 days instead of the 14 some players including the 3rd seed the Fed have.
Seems a reasonable thing to make light of methinks as it is clearly a tactical advantage,
Make your mind up also dear.
If he has such easy draws all the time, what was Mr Haase doing there yesterday, is he chopped liver?
No, he has had a relatively difficult draw this time compared to the others AND less time to do it in.
Andy rarely complains or makes excuses about anything & that is a fact
But he was well within his rights to say something (as the media also did in the UK) about it.
Oh and the reason he's included as 4th in the world is because he's got the 4th best results therefore....He's the 4th best player!
And has been for the last 4 years!
Kinda easy to work out really, in 4 seconds even, unless you're a moron!
That last part was Rhetorical btw Fleur....
Sosueme , 9/3/11 3:21 PM
@deuce,
Andy has now qualified for the world tour finals, which makes him the third!
Ahead of Roger......
Sosueme , 9/3/11 4:19 PM
Zare 9/3/11. Not only will AndyM rise to the challenge he`ll overcome and conquer!
He is afterall a Scot! This if the news is true.
mojo , 9/3/11 4:51 PM
Sosueme, yayayay :) and I'm a-going :)
deuce , 9/3/11 5:10 PM
Murray always complains about everything. He has a vile mouth. Swearing. I don't think it is allowed. He should be fined. Why isn't he fined?
And the easy draw? Murray has had the last two tournaments, easy draws. In fact, three. Check them out at the Australian, RG, and WImbledon. He had no rival player until the semi finals. Especially at wimbledon.
Federer played in the early hours of monday morning, 3am. So he didn't have an extra day. He would have spent 8 hours after this resting and sleeping, to play in the afternoon on Wednesday! Andy played the next day, Tuesday. He rested more at the start of the tournament. where you coming from? Don't you read the schedules?
The person who has the most rest this tournament is rafa. Always rafa has the easy draws and the most rest. Murray is second with the rest schedules too.
It's a fix. Murray probably complained about that too. Murray should work on his mouth and his manners.
Fleur , 9/3/11 6:35 PM
Fleur, I hope Cheryl and Ricky give you a job on this site. You make the perfect resident comedian.
jean , 9/3/11 6:56 PM
Oh, it's you again...
Are you going to stop this now you've clearly exhausted yourself?
Stop complaining about Murray complaining Fleur,
When it's all YOU seem to be able to do here,
Whinge, whine, moan...
Moan whinge whine etc,
Silly woman.
Sosueme , 9/3/11 7:03 PM
We could use a large bottle of weedkiller around here.
ed251137 , 9/3/11 8:08 PM
ed, ROFL!
deuce , 9/3/11 8:54 PM
zare -

Wow, that's quite something about the best man thing - nice to see such a friendship between rivals.
