Gael Monfils continues his bid for a return trip to the U.S. Open quarterfinals on Thursday. Standing in his way of the third round is Juan Carlos Ferrero.
Gael Monfils and Juan Carlos Ferrero will be going head-to-head for the second time in their careers when they clash in the second round of the U.S. Open on Thursday. Ferrero won their only previous encounter 6-3, 7-6(7) at the 2009 Montreal Masters.
Monfils, though, has a significant edge in form at the moment. The seventh-ranked Frenchman is 30-12 for his 2011 campaign after getting past Grigor Dimitrov in three entertaining sets on Monday. Monfils has reached at least the quarterfinals in his last four appearances, including a trip to the Washington title match.
Ferrero is laboring down at No. 105 in the world mostly because of injuries, but he has been solid when on the court this season. The 31-year-old Spaniard owns a 12-6 record, highlighted by a title in Stuttgart. He had not won a single match on hard courts prior to this week, but Ferrero outlasted Pablo Andujar 1-6, 7-5, 5-7, 6-1, 6-3 in his Flushing Meadows opener on Monday.
Both men are accustomed to U.S. Open success, so it will be tough for one to bow out this early. Ferrero finished runner-up to Andy Roddick in 2003, advanced to round four in 2009, and reached the third round last year. Monfils has been to the fourth round on three straight occasions and he was a quarterfinalist for the first time in 2010.
Count on an entertaining battle with a host of sizzling baseline rallies. Ferrero may be able to steal a set, but look for Monfils to advance without too much trouble.

I really enjoyed watching this match. I thought that Monfils had a great chance to break early in the fourth set, but couldn't get it done. He seemed to run out of steam as that set went on. I thought that Monfils would have to win it in four or else a fifth set would be too much.
The quality of the tennis was great. Ferrero looked like he might be getting tired in the third set, but somehow found a second wind and kept on fighting. He played brilliant tennis and stayed strong.
Yes, a well earned win for the veteran!

Beautiful !!!
This was TENNIS! Shame that one had to go out so early in tournament but I am glad for Ferrero. He was No1...and then injuries, bad luck and so on...
Vamos Ferrero... one for the "old" guys :)

Amazing. Absolutely amazing. It might well turn out to be the best match of the tournament. Monfils must be gutted but Ferrero deserved the win.
