For the third time this summer, John Isner and Marcos Baghdatis are set to go head-to-head. They also faced each other in Montreal and Winston-Salem, and now they take their act to the big stage of New York.
John Isner and Marcos Baghdatis will be squaring off for the fourth time in their careers and third time this summer when they clash in the first round of the U.S. Open on Wednesday.
Isner extended his perfect record in their head-to-head series to 3-0 with recent victories in Montreal and Winston-Salem. He rolled 6-3, 6-4 at the Masters event but had a much tougher time getting past Baghdatis 1-6, 6-3, 6-4 in the Winston-Salem quarterfinals en route to the title.
For Isner, his triumph just over a week ago near his hometown of Greensboro has been the highlight of a 2011 campaign that has progressed from mediocre to stellar. The 6'9'' American is 28-18 for the season after compiling a 12-4 record during the U.S. Open Series. Isner also kicked off his summer with a title on the grass courts of Newport.
Baghdatis is a disappointing 20-20 this year and he is struggling down at No. 59 in the world. The veteran Cypriot has a 4-5 record on the American hard courts this summer, but he at least managed to reach the quarterfinals in both Washington and Winston-Salem.
Current form and head-to-head history clearly favor Isner, but Baghdatis cannot be discounted. The underdog put up a much better showing against Isner last week after looking almost hopeless in Montreal. Look for the No. 28 seed to prevail once again, but Baghdatis should extend him to four sets and maybe even five.
