Two players going in different directions are set to face each other as Ivan Dodig and Nikolay Davydenko collide in first-round U.S. Open action on Tuesday. The winner could eventually run into Novak Djokovic.
Ivan Dodig and Nikolay Davydenko will be going head-to-head for the first time in their careers when they do battle in opening-round action at the U.S. Open on Tuesday.
On paper, this appears to be a relatively even matchup. Dodig comes in at No. 33 in the world, and he squeaked into the final seeded spot when Milos Raonic pulled out due to injury. Davydenko, at 39th in the rankings, narrowly missed out on a seed.
Current form, though, clearly favors Dodig. The Croat has earned 23 of his 33 career ATP math victories this season and his ranking, not surprisingly, is a career-high. Dodig recently toppled Rafael Nadal in the second round of the Rogers Cup.
At 30 years old, Davydenko seems to be slowing down in a hurry. The former world No. 3 is just 18-19 for his 2011 campaign and he has dropped his second match in four consecutive tournaments. Last week in Winston-Salem he dismissed Michael Russell before losing in straight sets to Sergiy Stakhovsky.
Despite his recent doldrums, Davydenko remains one of the most dangerous unseeded players in the field. However, the Russian is a streaky performer and right now he is lacking confidence. Look for Dodig to maintain his fine form and prevail in four sets.
