World No. 3 Roger Federer will commence his quest for a 17th Grand Slam title, as he takes to the court against opening-round opponent Santiago Giraldo. The players are set to contest their first meeting Monday night.
Third seed Roger Federer enters into the tournament with a 42-11 record this season. He will be looking to win title #2 in 2011, after capturing his first in Doha.
The 30-year-old Swiss will attempt to secure his first Grand Slam title since 2010, when he took home the Australian Open. He is five times a champion in New York, having pocketed the crown from 2004 through 2008.
Federer advanced to the 2010 semifinal, where he lost a five-set thriller to Novak Djokovic, 5-7, 6-1, 5-7, 6-2, 7-5.
World No. 54 Santiago Giraldo returns to action following a round of 16 loss to Andy Roddick in Winston-Salem. The 23-year-old is bidding for his 26th match win of the season.
Prediction: Federer in straight sets.
