World No. 50 Jarkko Nieminen survived a challenge in the second round, where he rallied to a three-set victory against Denis Istomin. The 30-year-old veteran will attempt to reach his first Tour-level quarterfinal this year.

World No. 39 Nikolay Davydenko holds a 2-0 edge against Sergiy Stakhovsky, which includes a first-round victory at the 2011 Western & Southern Open.
Davydenko kicked off his campaign with a 6-2, 6-2 win over qualifier Michael Russell. The Russian veteran looks to make his first quarterfinal since Munich.
World No. 41 Sergiy Stakhovsky won his opener against Andrey Golubev in three sets. The 25-year-old remains on course to reach his third hard-court quarterfinal this season.
