Tournament seeds Jurgen Melzer and Marcos Baghdatis will begin their campaigns in Winston-Salem, as they take to the court against respective opponents Igor Andreev and Ryan Sweeting on Monday.
(2) Jurgen Melzer vs. Igor Andreev
Second seed Jurgen Melzer holds a 4-1 series advantage over Igor Andreev. The players will be meeting for the first time since 2008, when the Russian earned his first victory over the Austrian.
Melzer makes his return to competition following a first-round loss to Gilles Simon in Cincinnati. The veteran is a modest 17-16 for the 2011 season.
Igor Andreev won his first-round match against Australian Bernard Tomic on Sunday. The Russian dropped the opening set, then rallied to a 6-7(5), 6-3, 6-4 victory in two hours and 6 minutes. He is bidding for his 15th Tour-level win of the year.
(8) Marcos Baghdatis vs. Ryan Sweeting
Eighth seed Marcos Baghdatis leads Ryan Sweeting 1-0 in the series, having won their only meeting at the 2010 tournament in Los Angeles.
Baghdatis looks to regroup after a first-round exit in Cincinnati. The 26-year-old Cypriot fell to American wildcard James Blake in three sets. He will attempt to win his 19th match of the season.
Ryan Sweeting returns to Tour-level following an unsuccessful attempt through the qualifying rounds at the Western & Southern Open. The 24-year-old American kicked off his Winston-Salem bid with a 6-3, 7-5 defeat of veteran Olivier Rochus.
