James Blake vs. Mikhail Kukushkin
Veteran James Blake makes his return to action following a round of 16 finish at the Western & Southern Open. The 31-year-old American won consecutive matches before falling to defending champion Roger Federer, 4-6, 1-6. He is bidding for his 14th Tour-level victory of the season.
Mikhail Kukuskin looks to regroup after an unsuccessful attempt to qualify in Cincinnati. The 23-year-old Russian has built a 6-16 Tour-level record for the year.
Michael Berrer vs. Donald Young
Michael Berrer leads Donald Young 1-0 in the series, having won their only previous meeting at the 2008 Australian Open.
The German is 13-16 for the year, after making the second round in Washington, DC. He will be looking to win consecutive matches for the first time since Roland Garros.
Young returns to competition following a first-round exit during qualifying at the Western & Southern Open. The 22-year-old American earned his best tour-level results in Washington, where he made the final four.
