  • Murray meets Fish in Cincinnati semifinal

    8/20/11 7:06 AM | Kelli DeMario
Murray meets Fish in Cincinnati semifinal World No. 4 Andy Murray will take on World No. 7 Mardy Fish for a place in the Western & Southern Open final. The players are set to contest their eighth career meeting on Saturday.

World No. 4 Andy Murray trails semifinal opponent Mardy Fish 3-4 in the series. The American has captured the last three meetings, which include two hard-court matches.

Murray advanced to the final four by virtue of his 6-3, 6-3 victory against 10th seed Gilles Simon. The 24-year-old enters into the semifinal without dropping a set, having downed both David Nalbandian and Alex Bogomolov in straights.

Murray is bidding for his first final since June, when he put together a title-winning run in London.

World No. 7 Mardy Fish made the semifinal after defeating World No. 2 Rafael Nadal early Friday. The veteran passed through the quarterfinal without the loss of serve, 6-3, 6-4. Fish has held 29 consecutive service games this week.

He looks to reach his fourth championship final of the year.

    Prediction: Fish in three sets.

This match might become very important in sense what is more effective nowadays: offensive approach played by Fish, or defensive by Murray. I'm eager to see who prevails at the end...

This could be the best match of the summer.

ts38 , 8/20/11 7:34 AM

C'mon Murray...you are so much better than Fish...you can do it...all you need to do is believe in yourself...guys, please don't get me wrong, but to consider Fish one of the favorites to win USO is more than ridiculous...just because he was able to reach couple of finals on the HC (all he ever did was playing these American HCs well) and who was able to beat Rafa who is as we all know playing lousy tennis at the moment, or who was lucky to take a set from tired Nole at Montreal, does not make him favorite for the USO...he has never won any Masters tournament for God sake...he will easily go down to, let's say, Nalby or Delpo at the USO...

OFC Andy can do it... no problems... all credits to Fish...he is new player, completely another game and personality. Always nice to see "older" player to reach his peak late in carrier. I think that he can reach No5 if he continues like this.
Andy...can win in two sets... but OMG... which Andy will go on court today.
Deuce, Alex... it's not easy to be in your skin ;)
Still Andy in 2 or 3 sets. No doubt in my mind.

zare , 8/20/11 11:28 AM

Oh zare, my skin is very itchy, twitchy, witchety..;) Should be v. v. relaxed because I don't expect Andy to win. Fishy seems a very bad match up for him at the best of times, besides the old Haddock is playing at the top of his game and the young sprat certainly isn't.
However, Andy does have the capacity to shock, thrill, disappoint, mesmerise, enrage, enthral....sometimes in the same match, so who knows?

deuce , 8/20/11 1:29 PM

Haha Deuce--- good luck today :)

zare , 8/20/11 1:45 PM

No disrespect to the other semi-finalists.......................am hoping for a Nole/Muzza final................

rafaisthebest , 8/20/11 5:35 PM

Id like to see a Muzza/Nole final though Muzza/Mardy could be a close thing!

mojo , 8/20/11 7:01 PM

Didn`t put that very clearly, what I ment to say was:- I`d like to see a Muzza/Nole final but I think the Mardy/Muzza final could be a close thing! If Andy keeps the lid on it though he defo has the match play to reel the Fish in.

mojo , 8/20/11 7:14 PM

Lol, my brain is fried! Should have said Mardy/Muzza semifinal!

mojo , 8/20/11 7:20 PM

RickyDimon , 8/20/11 7:20 PM

zare , 8/20/11 8:59 PM

raghav , 8/20/11 9:08 PM

Andy's serve has gone right off and he's let Fish off the hook :( Should've won half an hour ago :( Aaaaaahhhhhhh

deuce , 8/20/11 9:13 PM

'he's let Fish off the hook' haha thats quite good did you mean to put that?

rbennett , 8/20/11 9:17 PM

jeepers muzz, do something about that serve. excrutiating to watch. can't look. why muzzt we have to suffer this??? (sorry)

alex , 8/20/11 9:23 PM

50% 1st serves in just doesn't work it in a masters SF.

alex , 8/20/11 9:26 PM

murray won! whew! that fish challenge at 8-8 was life-saving =))

raghav , 8/20/11 9:36 PM

unless of course the other guys serves the same %. well done muzz. phewwww!! bottom line is you're in the final without dropping a set against some class players.
5s deuce

alex , 8/20/11 9:37 PM

alex, just flipping torture because...44% first serve in second set! What r we going to do with him :(
rhbennet: of course intentional, only reason to play Fish, isn't it????

deuce , 8/20/11 9:41 PM

Hooked the Fish and reeled him in!

mojo , 8/20/11 9:43 PM

Well done Andy... he managed to compose himself and not to
Not so nice match... but win is win...
Deuce...Alex... you will surely understand if I don't wish good luck to you :)))

zare , 8/20/11 9:56 PM

Well here we go. Andy gets to have a go at Djokovic. Forget behind the sofa Deuce I think we'll be trying to hide underneath it.
