World No. 7 Mardy Fish is set for a round of 16 meeting with 12th seed Richard Gasquet on Thursday. The players are vying for a spot in the Western & Southern Open quarterfinal.
Seventh seed Mardy Fish looks to break a 2-2 series tie with World No. 13 Richard Gasquet Thursday afternoon. After trailing the Frenchman 0-2, the American captured their last two meetings to hold a 2-1 edge on hard-court.
Fish turned in a solid performance in the second round, where he crushed former World No. 3 Nikolay Davydenko in straight sets. The 29-year-old needed just 62 minutes to close the match, 6-0, 6-2.
Fish remains on course to win his 35th match of the season.
Gasquet advanced to the round of 16 by virtue of his straight-set victory over Kevin Anderson. The 25-year-old Frenchman held ten of 11 service games, en route to a 7-6(4), 6-4 win in an hour and 40 minutes.
He is bidding for his sixth quarterfinal berth this year.
Prediction: Fish in straight sets.
