David Ferrer returned from injury with a hard-fought win over Grigor Dimitrov during second-round action in Cincinnati. Ferrer may have an even tougher test on his hands in the form of Gilles Simon on Thursday.
David Ferrer and Gilles Simon and will be going head-to-head for the first time since 2007 when they do battle in the third round of the Western & Southern Open on Thursday.
The two feisty baseliners faced each other twice four years ago and Ferrer prevailed on both occasions. The Spaniard lost only a matter of games in his pair of victories, but both encounters were contested on clay.
Simon is a much different player now and he will be glad to go up against Ferrer on a quicker surface. The Frenchman has overcome various injuries and is back up to No. 12 in the world thanks to an outstanding season. Simon, who picked up titles in Sydney and Hamburg, is 32-18 on the year following three-set victories this week over Jurgen Melzer and Janko Tipsarevic.
Ferrer is in the midst of a comeback from a more recent physical problem. In fact, the world No. 6 had not played since a runner-up finish last month in Bastad due to a wrist problem. Ferrer looked rusty at times in his opener on Wednesday, but he battled past Grigor Dimitrov 4-6, 6-1, 7-5. Cincinnati's No. 5 seed is now 40-11 for his 2011 campaign.
This should be war of attrition from the back of the court and lengthy cat-and-mouse rallies can be expected now that Ferrer has a match under his belt. Mainly because of more match practice of late, Simon should be able to advance after three tight sets.
