  • Murray, Nalbandian set for second-round showdown

    8/17/11 4:31 AM | Ricky Dimon
Murray, Nalbandian set for second-round showdown Andy Murray will have his work cut out for him as he tries to bounce back from an early loss in Montreal. The Scot is set to contest his Cincinnati opener against David Nalbandian on Wednesday.

Andy Murray and David Nalbandian will be squaring off for the fifth time in their careers when they do battle in the second round of the Western & Southern Open on Wednesday afternoon.

The head-to-head series is tied up at two wins apiece, but Murray took both of last year's encounters. The Scot prevailed 6-2, 6-2 at the Canada Masters and 2-6, 6-4, 6-3 at the Paris Masters. Nalbandian last defeated Murray in the quarterfinals of the 2008 Paris Masters.

At the moment, it's hard to expect what to get from either man. Murray has endured an up-and-down 2011 campaign in which surprising early exits have not been out of the ordinary. In fact, he dropped his Montreal opener to Kevin Anderson last week. Still, the world No. 4 owns a 29-10 record for the season and returns to a site where he is a former champion (Murray won Cincinnati in 2008).

Nalbandian remains a force when 100 percent, but physical issues have derailed the latter stages of his career. The 66th-ranked Argentine is a decent 14-8 for the year following a solid first-round victory over Kei Nishikori on Monday. Nalbandian is looking to bounce back from losing his openers in both Washington and Montreal.

Both men are question marks right now, so this could go either way. Nalbandian, though, is a streaky player and he is certainly not in the midst of a hot streak. Look for a back-and-forth match to go Murray's way in three sets.

don't know why i'm watching this, muzz again not caring whether he wins or not by the look of things. nalby tried his very best to give muzz his first service game, handing him 4 double faults, but muzz refused to even try to break him :(

this match is a little bit comical. Nobody can hold serve.

cherylmurray , 8/17/11 8:18 PM

and Nalbs just got broken AGAIN. Muzz wins the first set.

cherylmurray , 8/17/11 8:23 PM

muzz does it the hard way again. 2 breaks down and back to win, with the help of numerous nalby errors - quite excrutiating for a muzz fan. hopefully muzz will start to get into gear in set 2 ...

alex , 8/17/11 8:25 PM

it's quite hot out there guys..........................

The comments from the Muzz fans are so hilarious!!!

Cheryl
last week you spoke about retirement for good old Nalby.
But should he after hipsurgery not be allowed to take his time to get back or tries to get back? Even players in the prime(DelP;) take a good year to return to their fittest. So an old guy like Nalbandian is allowed to take a that time (and more).
I think tennis is so much greater with a good mix of youngsters, old guys and primesters. And in the end Roger winning the lot I guess;-)

hilarious? it's agony ...

alex , 8/17/11 8:37 PM

and another set of breaks. and another bp for Muzz. Good grief.

cherylmurray , 8/17/11 8:38 PM

thank goodness for that, some first serves in an error-free hold.
surely it's time for tubby-bye-bye now.

alex , 8/17/11 8:41 PM

well done in the end muzz, probly just needing match practice.

alex , 8/17/11 8:47 PM

A win is a win is a win. alex u were too harsh. Andy needs match practise but once he settled into the second set, our boy was fine. Don't expect him to win this, just get oiled, he's v. rusty at the mo. Needs WD40.

deuce , 8/17/11 8:56 PM

by the way, which *#!"*-? is reposnsible for putting these stupid polls onthe homepage?? like del potro's already ahead of muzz in the rankings. let's not forget that since a-rod went out there's only one player other than fed who's ever won this tournament before. and it AIN'T rafa ... and it AIN'T nole ... and it AIN'T delpo ... ! It's the guy who's just finished his heat training in miami and has just had a week off ;)

alex , 8/17/11 8:58 PM

yep deuce, i haven't seen muzz for a while and i'm a bit rusty at watching him too - you need wd40 for that sometimes too!

alex , 8/17/11 9:03 PM

alex, just passing some over, makes a change from snacks and cookies..;)

Terribly Rusty first set from both players, Nalbys serve was almost as bad as Murrays
(fortunately for him).
However once M Bear got into the `schwing`of things in set 2 it was all looking
rather sweet.
Next up is Bogoommloolovvoolop....?!
Yes Yes Yes!
Remember M Bear!
Revenge is a dish best served up hot and sweaty under the Cincy Sun.
Just as well, as they're going to make you play in the middle of the day again no doubt.
mmmm!
I wonder if Mr Alex Bogoommooloovvolop
is related to Mr Alex (ander) Dolgollovovoppoloolop?
It's possible, no?
