Feliciano Lopez and Gael Monfils will be in action on Wednesday, as most of the men’s field contests their second round matches.
Feliciano Lopez vs. Philipp Kohlschreiber
This match-up could easily have been a replay of this year’s Wimbledon third round which saw Andy Roddick knocked out at the All-England Club by Feliciano Lopez. Instead, Lopez will take on Germany’s Philipp Kohlschreiber.
This is good news for the Spaniard. Lopez has not lost a match to the German in any of their 3 encounters. They even played this season already, in Rome where Lopez won in 3.
Kohlschreiber’s win over Roddick on Monday night showed the German in solid form. Roddick, though, did most of the work for Kohlschreiber, losing his temper and gifting the third set to the German. Lopez is also a big server, but he’s been a bit more consistent than Roddick has over the past few months.
Prediction – Lopez in 3.
Gael Monfils vs. Ivan Dodig
France’s Gael Monfils, ranked 8 in the world, has had some good results this summer, but he is without a title for the season so far. He got close in Washington DC, but was edged by Radek Stepanek. He also made the quarterfinals in Montreal, where he lost to the seemingly unstoppable Novak Djokovic.
Monfils will take on Ivan Dodig in his opening match in Cincinnati. Dodig has had some interesting wins this summer, including an unlikely second round victory over Rafael Nadal. The Croat took out Ernests Gulbis in the first round this week.
Prediction – Monfils for the win.
