  • Ferrer, Tsonga aim for Cincinnati third round

    8/17/11 4:34 AM | Ricky Dimon
Ferrer, Tsonga aim for Cincinnati third round David Ferrer and Jo-Wilfried Tsonga will be part of an action-packed Wednesday in Cincinnati. They are set for respective meetings with Grigor Dimitrov and Alex Bogomolov.

    (5) David Ferrer vs. (WC) Grigor Dimitrov

Ferrer has not played in exactly one month due to a wrist injury, but he is making a quicker-than-expected return this week at the Western & Southern Open. Following a first-round bye, the sixth-ranked Spaniard will take the court on Wednesday against Dimitrov. Physical issues are the only thing that have stopped Ferrer this season, as he owns a 39-11 record and two titles in addition to Davis Cup heroics. Cincinnati's No. 5 seed last played in Bastad, where he finished runner-up to Robin Soderling.

Just 20 years old, Dimitrov registers at a career-high ranking of No. 56 in the world. The Bulgarian, however, is just 12-17 for his 2011 campaign. He won a pair of matches two weeks ago in Washington and is taking advantage of a wild card this week, having dismissed Marsel Ilhan in first-round action on Monday. This could go either way based on Ferrer's health or lack thereof, but at 100 percent Ferrer should win this in straight sets.

    (15) Jo-Wilfried Tsonga vs. (Q) Alex Bogomolov

Tsonga and Bogomolov will also be going head-to-head for the first time in their careers when they meet in the Cincinnati second round on Wednesday. Both players are in the midst of impressive summers. Tsonga reached the Montreal semis last week before falling to Novak Djokovic and he is 33-15 for the season after hammering Marin Cilic on Tuesday.

Bogomolov is 15-12 on the year and up to a career-high ranking of No. 50 in the world, an especially impressive feat for a 28-year-old. The veteran American opened in Cincinnati on Monday with a straight-set dismissal of countryman Robby Ginepri. Bogomolov recently advanced to the Los Angeles semis and he qualified for the Montreal main draw last week before advancing one round. The underdog is no pushover, but Tsonga in straight sets is the pick.
