Montreal semifinalist Jo-Wilfried Tsonga has a difficult opener on his hands in Cincinnati. He is going up against Marin Cilic on Tuesday.
Jo-Wilfried Tsonga and Marin Cilic will be going head-to-head for just the second time in their careers at the ATP level when they clash in the first round of the Western & Southern Open on Tuesday afternoon. Tsonga beat Cilic in a pair of Challenger events in 2007, but Cilic prevailed 4-6, 6-3, 6-2 on the grass courts of Queen's Club that same season.
While both men have endured ups and downs since that first meeting, the two competitors are in solid form at the moment. Cilic is well off his career-high ranking at No. 26 in the world, but he is a respectable 30-16 for his 2011 campaign. The 6'6'' Croat has produced stellar results of late, reaching the Hamburg quarters, Umag final, and the Montreal third round. Cilic took out Juan Martin Del Potro last week before falling to eventual Montreal champion Novak Djokovic.
Tsonga also bowed out to Djokovic last week, although not until the semifinals. The 15th-seeded Frenchman's run included a third-round upset of Roger Federer, whom he also ousted in five sets at Wimbledon. Tsonga is now 32-15 for the year and he has won 15 of his last 19 matches.
The big question for Tsonga is how he is holding up physically. The world No. 10 retired against Djokovic last Saturday while trailing 3-0 in the second set, citing a right arm injury. Even if he is 100 percent, Tsonga still has be tired from his week in Montreal. Look for Cilic to score a minor upset and advance in Cincinnati.
