Ernests Gulbis and Stanislas Wawrinka will be in action as the first round wraps up in Cincinnati.
Ernests Gulbis vs. Ivan Dodig
Croatia’s Ivan Dodig had the win of his career last week in Montreal with a second round upset of Spaniard Rafael Nadal. The Croat showed off the best of his serving against Nadal before crashing out to Janko Tipsarevic in the third round.
His first round opponent in Cincinnati is an in-form Ernests Gulbis. The Latvian came from out of nowhere to win the tournament in LA. Gulbis only made the third round in Montreal, but he lost to eventual finalist Mardy Fish, who has been playing spectacular tennis recently.
Prediction – Dodig is ranked higher than Gulbis’s 48 at No. 36 in the world, but the Latvian is in better form. Gulbis in straight sets.
Stanislas Wawrinka vs. Andrey Golubev
After a disastrous grass court season, Switzerland’s Stanislas Wawrinka has righted the ship. The Swiss man put in a solid showing last week in Montreal, also playing victim to American Mardy Fish. Wawrinka played better in the early-goings at the Canadian Open than he had in several months.
He should have a comfortable start to the Cincinnati Masters. Andrey Golubev of Russia is ranked outside the top 100 (101) and worse he’s only won 4 matches this year in tour-level events. He’s had some better success on the Challenger circuit though.
Prediction – Wawrinka in straight sets.
