American Mardy Fish will try to be just the second person this year to defeat world No. 1 Novak Djokovic in the Montreal final.
Serbia’s Novak Djokovic is one win away from breaking a number of records. Were the Serb to beat Mardy Fish on Sunday, he would become the first player ever to win 5 Masters titles in the same season. He would also be the only player to win his first tournament as world No. 1.
Unfortunately for American opponent Mardy Fish, the odds are not in his favor. Fish has not beaten Djokovic in 6 tries; and in their last 2 meetings, Fish didn’t even get close to taking a set.
The good news for Fish is that the American has never played better. He is ranked No. 8 in the world, which makes him the top-ranked US player. He has improved his fitness and has positioned himself as a threat on any hard court. The bad news is that Djokovic has never played better either. The Serb has amassed a mind-boggling 52-1 record on the season and has been nigh unbeatable since the Australian Open.
Prediction – Look for an improved Fish to make a match of this, but Djokovic will come through in the end.

mriiidula , 8/14/11 9:28 PM
Phuaaaaaah.... he looks tired...
lot of break chances for Fish for now?
Knee problems ???
zare , 8/14/11 9:38 PM

mriiidula , 8/14/11 10:06 PM

ed, thanks, but that's what i'm using - the english links are getting proper stuck, while the serbian ones are working well. i dont know why.
mriiidula , 8/14/11 10:39 PM
Seemed nole left few energy only in his tank. Most of the rallies will be in favor of Fish ended by nole's UE. Fish just showed an amazing performance in 2nd set. Hope nole will smarter using his remaining energy...
AJDEEE!!!
bryanindo , 8/14/11 10:44 PM
Arghhhhh... I did it again... Talking ahead:(((
Must admit, this Fish is comletely another player... Well done Mardy, second set.
zare , 8/14/11 10:47 PM
All of a sudden, I'm like Mardy's chances of pulling off the upset here. It's been a long time since I've seen Djokovic this out of sorts with his game. Hopefully Mardy will stay focused and takes it to Nole every chance he gets.
djb247365 , 8/14/11 10:48 PM
1 set a piece.It can be done.
Fish does deserve a big win in his career.
But he should be rready for Novak to up his intensity.
Sienna , 8/14/11 10:49 PM
Fish for 2nd 6-3 after breaking nole's.
36% 2nd serve percentage plus only 7 winner in this set, nole represents his current condition..
Come ON Nole.. Don't think much about breaking the record.. It's only another bonus!
bryanindo , 8/14/11 10:51 PM
Zare what Novak yelled in 1st game of 3rd set? I had muted TV :(
atg , 8/14/11 10:57 PM
Ugh. The first time this tournament I've predicted a straight set win and it goes to 3. And Nole may not even win it.
Come onnnnnnnn.
mriiidula , 8/14/11 11:02 PM
Sorry atg... Didn't got it... Sounded like "Gde si..."... " Where are you."
zare , 8/14/11 11:03 PM
Wow a set of Nole! I think he is over the hill now. His peak is over!!!
vmk1 , 8/14/11 11:03 PM
Fish is playing some outstanding aggressive tennis, serving and volleying, taking time away from Nole and keeping him out of his comfort zone. This is some great stuff from Fish. I did not expect this toughness and savvy play from him. Great job to even the match up at one set all. Fish is showing no nerves.
Nativenewyorker , 8/14/11 11:09 PM
Scarrrryyyyyyy... Nole looks lethargic and tired...
Wake up!!! ...whats wrong?
...and Fish is playing good...
zare , 8/14/11 11:10 PM
2-2. Another service game from nole.
Come ON!
bryanindo , 8/14/11 11:11 PM
So nervous. Come onnnnnnnn Nole, you know you can!
Atg: on twitter people are saying that Novak is muttering to himself "slow, I'm so slow".
mriiidula , 8/14/11 11:14 PM
Fish is playing out of his mind but he lacks that all important killer instinct.
And as I write Nole gets the break.
ed251137 , 8/14/11 11:14 PM
Seemed nole doesn't have more energy to produce winners.
Breaking serves in all Mardy's UE.
Seemed he thinks being defensive is more suitable to him to play better.
AJDEEE!!!
bryanindo , 8/14/11 11:16 PM
Time to hold now. Almost there.
mriiidula , 8/14/11 11:16 PM
Mr Nole please get this game of yours when you play Rafa. Please..
vmk1 , 8/14/11 11:18 PM
Yes! It's almost there! Hang ON!
bryanindo , 8/14/11 11:20 PM
Vmk1, rafa will totally outplayed nole if he played like this. It might be some time near future but only In Masters, please, not GS...
bryanindo , 8/14/11 11:23 PM
Well not if Rafa brings his Dodig game :) Well all the Nole fans a great moment. You have to doff your hat to this guy. Good as Rafa and Fed are, I never saw such dominance. This is just superhuman. I do not know how long this will last but going by the look of it, it seems like it will be a long time before Nole would be defeated. Tremendous absolutely sensational. I only wish Rafa was not at the receiving end of this run 5 times. Well new tournament new hope. Hope that elusive loss comes at Cincy!
vmk1 , 8/14/11 11:30 PM
Breathing is difficult right now.
mriiidula , 8/14/11 11:31 PM
A single point for Record!
bryanindo , 8/14/11 11:34 PM
Mr Nole is human after all
vmk1 , 8/14/11 11:37 PM
YES YES!!
Mriidula, we can breathe NOW! Well Done nole! Please keep this spirit of Champion!
bryanindo , 8/14/11 11:39 PM
First ever to win 5 masters titles in a year. First to win his first tournament as world #1. big day! <3
Congrats all you Nole fans :)
mriiidula , 8/14/11 11:42 PM
Great, my link died. Guess I'll crash now, will catch the presentation on YouTube.
mriiidula , 8/14/11 11:44 PM
Yes, Congrats to all nole's fans!
Back in Montreal 2007, his 1st Masters trophy, and in 2011 still his 1st (as world #1).
Really a big day! We nole's fans in Jakarta, Indonesia will surely celebrate this win..
bryanindo , 8/14/11 11:48 PM
Thank you Novak... even tired and not too inspirational ...still can dig deep and find the power when it is needed.
Big five in one year.... and we are still rolling... everything is possible...
AJDE NOLEEEEE!!!!!
zare , 8/14/11 11:59 PM
I had no doubt Nole would win this...Fish is not in his league and even not playing his best Nole is so much better than most of the players on tour...great new record for Nole...it must be wonderful to be Nole's fan these days...congrats to all!
natashao , 8/15/11 12:37 AM
thank you mriidula...same to you
i have a strange feeling that none amongst the top 4 will win cincy this year....and if i had to chose between the top 4...it would be rafa getting his first title here....Vaaamos
vrael , 8/15/11 6:01 AM
Awesomeness. 5 out of 6 is huge, maybe the pressure got to him a little since he's been away from the game for a month or so, but I'm sure he'll be ready by the time the USO starts.
samprallica , 8/15/11 6:13 AM
Congratulations to Nole and all his fans :) Amazing run! We have awful quiz show in UK and the catch phrase is...."And who will beat you?" Indeed, indeed.
deuce , 8/15/11 7:28 AM
Well I would say the train is pretty well out of control!!!!!
Nole has raised the bar to new heights and is clearly inducing a sense of dread in everybody who has to face him. Having said that I was amazed at how well Mardy held up last night and made it a much more interesting final than most people would have anticipated - but the result was never really in any doubt.
Way back in 2007, when everybody was focussing on the Fedal rivalry, I remember watching several Rafa-Nole matches and thinking then that Djokovic was the person who was going to be the real challenge for Nadal.
Rafa, you are going to have to pull your socks up! And Andy you had better get your act together!
ed251137 , 8/15/11 8:37 AM
All the stars will have to align ed., for that to happen, including someone like Dodig taking out one of the other 3 out. And, for Andy to find the magical form he did against Roddick this year and Meltzer/Fed last year. And then....POW!!
deuce , 8/15/11 10:36 AM
I felt sorry for Mardy in that final.
Novie was clearly there for the taking, & he created so many chances in set 1, but he simply didn't believe early enough that he could do it.
For Novie B it was just another Masters (of which I congratulate him!) but for Fish Fingers it would have been a major moment!
Was most impressed also by the way he could stand toe to toe with Djoko during the rallies..
Novak is still my fav for NYC but more hot fav, not red hot..
As for M Bear, I think I've come full circle on this one.
The reason he went out was due to his preparations I think.
Remember he won Canada last year & the year before and subsequently fizzled out strangely both times in the OTRM (one that really matters) in New York.
Obviously he didn't expect to go out so early but he wasn't going to jinx his New York campaign for anything.
Sosueme , 8/15/11 3:19 PM
Sosueme, but it seems v. difficult for darling Andy to judge between getting so little court time that he's pants(2010) and getting so much that he's injured (2009). At USOpen he really needs a relatively easy couple of matches to play himself in..but..but...However, at least at Slams u have to play first round, and here's hoping Andy has someone who lies down and wants his tummy tickled. Faint hope cos these days a 90 year old player fresh off the Challenge tour, thinks he's in with a chance :(
deuce , 8/15/11 4:22 PM
He didn?t have enough matches overall last year, but in the run up to the USO last year he had perhaps too many (in the heat as well) Deuce dear.
Which resulted in the Blow Out against Stan the Man where M Bear looked more or less like he had been hit with with particulary nasty bout of Diarrhoea..Terrible Capitulation.
Don?t worry though!
I have Ninjas ensconced in the Rafters of Arthur Ashe like vampire bats ready to strike if he does this again (honestly it would be merciful).
He needs to stop hiding behind Cahill and his 2 week training block and get himself a full time coach, its as simple as that.
Then hopefully we shall see an improvement in his management and the obvious problems he still has with his game.
As for Cincy, as I suggested above I think he'll be more up for this one than he could be last year...
