Juan Martin Del Potro will look to set up a showdown with Roger Federer when he takes the court against Andreas Seppi on Sunday in Cincinnati. James Blake and Marcos Baghdatis are also in action.
Juan Martin Del Potro vs. Andreas Seppi
Del Potro and Seppi will be squaring off for the first time in their careers at the ATP level when they clash in the opening round of the Western & Southern Open on Sunday. Their only previous encounter came at the 2007 Sunrise Challenger, in which Seppi prevailed 7-5, 6-4. Del Potro, of course, is a much different player now and a former U.S. Open champion. The Argentine is making his way back from injury and already up to No. 19 in the world. Del Potro owns a 37-11 record for the season and is coming off a second-round loss in Montreal to Marin Cilic.
Seppi also fell to Cilic, dropping him to 17-17 for his 2011 campaign after the first-round exit. Showing his all-court prowess, the 52nd-ranked Italian captured his first career ATP title earlier this year on the grass courts of Eastbourne and he recently advanced to a quarterfinal on the clay courts of Umag. Seppi, though, would prefer to play this one on a slower surface against the big-hitting Del Potro. Count on Del Potro advancing to second-round tilt against Roger Federer after two sets.
Marcos Baghdatis vs. (WC) James Blake
Baghdatis and Blake will be going head-to-head for the second time in the last two months when they face each other on Sunday in a tough Cincinnati opener. Earlier this summer at Wimbledon, Blake showed signs off storming back from a two-set deficit only to see Baghdatis emerge with a 6-4, 6-2, 6-7(5), 4-6, 6-4 victory. Baghdatis leads the series 2-0, having also scored a 6-4, 6-2 win last season in Rotterdam. The 40th-ranked Cypriot, though, is just 18-18 this season and is looking to bounce back from a first-round Montreal loss to John Isner.
Blake, on the other hand, is enjoying a resurgence of sorts this summer. The 86th-ranked American is climbing out of the depths of both injury and poor play with some solid showings on the hard courts. Blake is 11-10 in 2011 and is coming off a third-round performance in Washington. He has suffered competitive losses to John Isner (Atlanta and Washington) and Del Potro (Los Angeles) following a Challenger title last month in Winnetka. Look for a relatively in-form Blake to dismiss Baghdatis in three sets.
