Mardy Fish and Stanislas Wawrinka will take to the court on quarterfinal Friday in a bottom half that is now wide open.
Montreal will prove to be an excellent opportunity for a player in the bottom half of the draw. Both Rafael Nadal and Andy Murray went crashing out in the second round, leaving American Mardy Fish and Tomas Berdych as the top seeds remaining.
Fish has already had a good summer hardcourt swing. The American won the event in Atlanta and made the finals in Los Angeles and he now has a good shot at making at least the semifinals in Montreal.
Standing in his way will be Stanislas Wawrinka. The Swiss man, ranked 17 in the world, had a dismal grass court season, but appears to be fit and ready to go in the pre-US Open run-up.
Fortune smiled on Wawrinka when Kevin Anderson knocked a rusty Andy Murray out in the second round. Wawrinka had already taken out David Nalbandian, who has been off form all summer and American veteran Michael Russell moving into the third round, where he dispatched of Anderson.
Despite a first round bye, Fish’s path to the quarters was more complicated than Wawrinka’s. The American debuted in Montreal against Feliciano Lopez and next faced tough Latvian Ernests Gulbis.
Prediction – Fish is playing great tennis. The American for the win in 3.

I saw this match and Fish is looking very good. He has to know that thiis may be his one chance to have a shot at winning this title. The stars have aligned for him with three of the top four players already out.
Fish hasn't had an easy draw, either. When he came back to tie it up at 4-all in that second set, I thought he would win it in two. It went to a tb and he wasn't able to get it done, but Wawa was gone in that third set.
Nice to see for Fish!
