A semifinal spot in Montreal will be on the line when Tomas Berdych and Janko Tipsarevic clash on Friday. Both men are coming off impressive straight-set victories.
Tomas Berdych and Janko Tipsarevic will be going head-to-head for the third time in their careers at the ATP level when they do battle in the quarterfinals of the Rogers Cup on Monday.
Tipsarevic has won their two previous encounters, both on hard courts; seven years ago in Stockholm and 7-5, 6-2, 2-6, 7-6(5) last season with home-court advantage in a Davis Cup rubber. Berdych, though, has defeated Tipsarevic twice in two tries at the Challenger level; including at the prestigious 2009 Sunrise, Florida event.
It should not come as too big of a surprise that these competitors have advanced to the quarters, given their current form and hard-court prowess. Tipsarevic, however, has emerged from the unseeded ranks thanks to some stellar play and while benefiting from a section of the draw vacated by Rafael Nadal.
The 24th-ranked Serb ousted Alejandro Falla and Fernando Verdasco, then dismissed Ivan Dodig--who had taken out Nadal--on Thursday. Tipsarevic is now an outstanding 33-16 for his 2011 campaign.
Berdych has not erupted at the Grand Slams like he did last year (French Open semis, Wimbledon final), but he continues to be a quarterfinal machine in 2011. The ninth-ranked Czech is through to the last eight for a seventh time this season following victories over Alexandr Dolgopolov. Making a late push for Top 8 seeding at the U.S. Open, Berdych registers at 36-15 for the year.
Is now the time for Berdych to get over the hump? Montreal's No. 7 seed has reached only one semifinal this season and has not yet advanced to a final. He won't mind going up against Tipsarevic instead of Nadal, but the underdog is no pushover. Look for Berdych to prevail in three tight sets.
