8/11/11 2:48 PM | Cheryl Murray
While the bottom half of the draw is in shambles, the top half seeds are nearly all intact. No. 8 seed Nicolas Almagro will take on No. 10 seed Richard Gasquet for a quarterfinal berth.
If this match were being played on a clay court, Nicolas Almagro would be the clear favorite. The Spaniard has already beaten France’s Richard Gasquet twice on the red stuff, both in 2010. Unfortunately for the Spaniard, they meet this time on hard courts.
Almagro spent his post-Wimbledon in Europe, taking advantage of the last clay court tournaments of the year before coming to Montreal. The Spaniard performed well, but 3 successive clay-court tournaments were hardly good preparation for the summer hard court swing.
Gasquet took time off post-Wimbledon and he comes into Montreal off his round of 16 showing at the All-England Club.
Prediction – Gasquet is the better hard-courter, and he has been in good form so far this week. The Frenchman for the win.
