  • Berdych goes up against Karlovic in third-round action

    8/11/11 1:23 PM | Ricky Dimon
Berdych goes up against Karlovic in third-round action A quarterfinal spot in Montreal will be at stake when Tomas Berdych and Ivo Karlovic do battle on Thursday. They are facing each other for the first time in three years.

Tomas Berdych and Ivo Karlovic will be squaring off for the fourth time in their careers when they meet in the third round of the Rogers Cup on Thursday.

Karlovic leads the head-to-head series 2-1, having prevailed most recently in Rotterdam three years ago. Their most memorable encounter came one year earlier (also on indoor hard courts), when Karlovic scored a 6-7(5), 7-6(2), 7-6(13) victory.

The 6'10'' Croat is no stranger to those kinds of scorelines; in fact, he survived a similar one on Wednesday against Philipp Petzschner. After outlasting Juan Monaco in another third-set tiebreaker, Karlovic battled back from a break down in the third and overcame Petzschner 6-7(0), 7-6(2), 7-6(6). The world No. 125 is now 13-17 for the season and is on the rise from a ranking that is deflated due to injury.

Berdych is healthy and still flying high at ninth in the world after what was a breakout 2010 campaign. The Czech is 35-15 on the year following a three-set victory over Alexandr Dolgopolov on Wednesday. Making his 2011 U.S. Open Series debut, Berdych earned a first-round bye as the No. 7 seed.

Like any match involving Karlovic, this could go either way and will come down to the critical moments late in sets. The underdog has already delivered the goods twice on those occasions this week, but Berdych is a slightly different opponent. Look for Berdych to hold off Karlovic late in the third.
