Fernando Verdasco and Janko Tipsarevic will kick off their weeks in Montreal on Tuesday. They are set for respective meetings with Tobias Kamke and Alejandro Falla.
(15) Fernando Verdasco vs. (Q) Tobias Kamke
Verdasco will continue his U.S. Open Series campaign when he takes the court at the Rogers Cup on Tuesday. The 20th-ranked Spaniard returned to the hard courts last week in Washington, where he advanced to the quarterfinals before falling to eventual champion Radek Stepanek. Verdasco is a decent 26-17 for the season and will hope for a few good weeks on the horizon in order to crack a Top 16 seed at the year's final Grand Slam in Flushing Meadows.
Up first for Verdasco in Montreal is Kamke, who has already enjoyed a fine week having qualified for the main draw. The German, who was ATP Newcomer of the Year in 2010, is 11-17 for the season and registers at No. 95 in the rankings. Kamke has played an interesting schedule this summer, bouncing back and forth between the United States and Germany. He won one match in Washington before succumbing to John Isner, to whom he also lost in the Newport semis. Look for Verdasco to prevail in two competitive sets.
Janko Tipsarevic vs. (Q) Alejandro Falla
Tipsarevic and Falla will be squaring off for the third time in their careers at the ATP level when they do battle in the Montreal first round on Tuesday. Falla won in straight sets at the 2010 French Open, but Tipsarevic got revenge just a few months later with a routine victory on the hard courts of Washington. Current form points to another win for Tipsarevic, who is a stellar 30-16 for his 2011 campaign, The 24th-ranked Serb recently advanced to the Washington quarters before losing to Gael Monfils.
Falla is a modest 8-13 this season, but he managed to qualify for the main draw over the weekend with wins over Zack Fleishman and Amer Delic. Toiling down at No. 109 in the world, the Colombian advanced one round in Los Angeles but then got blown out 6-0, 6-1 by Thomaz Bellucci. He is coming off a first-round exit in Washington at the hands of Chris Guccione. Look for Tipsarevic to see off Falla in straight sets.
