  • Murray begins Canadian Open title defense

    8/9/11 4:50 AM | Cheryl Murray
Murray begins Canadian Open title defense Andy Murray has won the past two editions of the Rogers Cup, with his last win coming on the courts of Toronto last year. He will take on Kevin Anderson of South Africa.

This may not be the easiest opening match that Murray could have drawn. South Africa’s Kevin Anderson is a big server and he also has the benefit of having already played a match in Montreal. Anderson took out Pablo Andujar in the first round on Monday.

Murray should have plenty of confidence coming into Montreal. The Scot won the Queen’s Club event and made the semifinals at Wimbledon, where he lost to Rafael Nadal.

The hard courts in Canada seem to especially favor Murray’s brand of baseline tennis. Two years ago, when Juan Martin Del Potro looked like he would run through the entirety of the men’s draw, Murray put a halt on the Argentine in the final. In addition, Murray’s return game is among the finest in men’s tennis. Anderson and his big weapon should find no purchase here.

Prediction – Murray for the win in straight sets.

Murray shouldn't have any problems with his one.

Aaaahhh, u spoke 2 soon! Look at that score! Andy is very, very rusty :( Wake up man!

deuce , 8/9/11 8:45 PM

oh dear, andy's in all sorts of problems isnt he. i'm not watching so i cant tell what's wrong.

mriiidula , 8/9/11 8:59 PM

If Andy breaks back in the 2nd set I think he'll win the match because Anderson cannot continue at this level for 3 sets.

nadline , 8/9/11 9:07 PM

The top players suffer from the long break after Wimbledon. Last year Andy was on the ball in Toronto and Cincy because he didn't take the break whilst Rafa, Roger and Nole suffered.

Oh Dear, Anderson now has 2 breaks in the 2nd set.

nadline , 8/9/11 9:12 PM

I'm not watching either, but it looks as if Andy's leaving this tournament :(

deuce , 8/9/11 9:13 PM

oh.my.word. This is AWFUL from Murray. Wowee.

cherylmurray , 8/9/11 9:20 PM

cheryl, then really glad I'm NOT watching...:(

deuce , 8/9/11 9:22 PM

Awful, awful awful from Andy! Does he not care or something???? :(

deuce , 8/9/11 9:27 PM

I've never seen Anderson play as well as this and Andy must be rusty beause he normally returns much better than this, even his serve was off.

nadline , 8/9/11 9:28 PM

Andy did not feel like playing tennis today...:((

natashao , 8/9/11 9:29 PM

I wasn`t watching either but was following the score so knew the news wasn`t good! Think AMurray should cancel the new diet.

mojo , 8/9/11 9:43 PM

I don't think it's the diet he's just lacking match play.

nadline , 8/9/11 9:46 PM

Well he should get a shrink or a psych to figure out why he is not ready to do battle with a guy like Anderson. Talking in pressers on how good you have trained and willing to take over #3. Well heshould be ready to back it up.
It is a tough world and reaching what he has done is not easy or comes with no pain etc. But to become the real deal he wont be needing a new diet but he needs to gain in the mental department the mental powers of Federer, Nadal and since this year Djoker ar far more superior then his.

Sienna , 8/9/11 9:50 PM

it feels bad when a ranked player loses early in the tour..more so, he is the defending champ :-(

raghav , 8/9/11 10:12 PM

I saw Murray's match and he was just not in any kind of decent form. His serving was really off, so many missed first serves. In the second set Murray was serving 29% first serves! That is just shocking. I didn't even see any emotion. Every aspect of his game was off and Anderson came in ready with a game plan and was able to take advantage of Murray's poor serving. Anderson used his big serve and was very aggressive.

This is a real disappointmen and quite shocking.

Nativenewyorker , 8/10/11 12:52 AM

Probably the worst attempt at a title defense ever.

xrf , 8/10/11 8:29 AM

I came back on here because I realized that my words sounded harsh about Murray today. I was only saying what I honestly saw in his play, however I want to be respectful to his fans here, especially the gracious deuce.

I really do offer my condolences for this disconcerting result. I totally did not see it coming and know that it must be harder for his loyal fans.

Nativenewyorker , 8/10/11 10:42 AM

NNY, it's fine. I'm sure if Alex or I'd seen the match we'd have totally agreed with you.
zare, am not happy with blame the mother stuff though and a bit rich coming from a Nole supporter......No, Andy must take responsibility, and fast!

deuce , 8/10/11 2:33 PM

Yeah, if zare is a Nole supporter then the mother advice is indeed a bit rich. Nole needs to ditch not just his mother but his parents.

rafaelite , 8/10/11 3:10 PM

What harm is Andy's Mum doing? At least she knows about tennis and she does not interfere or annoy the other player, during play; I think she is just the same as U. Toni and that's not doing Rafa any harm. Maybe she should take over his coaching full time because she knows him better than anyone else and she knows what she is talking about unlike some other parents.

nadline , 8/10/11 3:23 PM

Sorry to hear this disappointing result. One of those days where Andy didn't "find the fear" as Tignor calls it, or did not "find the fight" if you prefer. Not taking anything away from his opponent of course.

Whatever it is mentally, no doubt that Andy and his mom and other team members have known for years that it needs addressing and must have been working on it in the best ways they know how to. It may be, in his case, a very difficult thing to change. Many of us have those aspects of our person that would be so good to change but are so difficult to change. (And in this he is far from alone among the top 100 male or female tennis players. It is just heartbreaking in his case because he has more potential than almost any of them.)

chlorostoma , 8/10/11 3:31 PM

I think nadline's idea is good. Judy for coach. Also maybe luckystar for guru!

rafaelite , 8/10/11 3:33 PM

Having read up on AMurrays match (was joking about the diet), he admittted himself he felt sluggish and really didnt play well at all, served 5 double faults. Nadine maybe his mum should take over his coaching fulltime, I said before I think he would benefit from a permanent coach and possibly the input from a sports psychologist. There`s a very emotional photo of AMurray in our press this morning, but as always he will learn from this and move onwards and upwards.

mojo , 8/10/11 6:22 PM

"What harm is Andy's Mum doing.."

We don't know, probably none, but big boys don't need their mums around so much & he shouts at her sometimes as if its her fault!

"Maybe she should take over his coaching full time..."

No, Nadline Darling, NO!

Agree with Sienna, he needs a good sports psych as he is clearly something of a basket case & a good coach (also don't think Cahill trained him in the off season). But he'll have to relax and listen to others, so an attitude change is required quickly & that's not easy.
I dont care if you are a fan of Murray or not, but if you're a fan of tennis you have to see that this is bad for the game when such a player can blow out like this so often.

Sosueme , 8/10/11 6:25 PM

Nativenewyorker, I didn`t think you were being harsh just truthfull. Yes, AMurray can be a bit volatile and perhaps the input of a psychologist would assist him against this, though if you were to compare with John McEnroe in his day AMurray is calm.

mojo , 8/10/11 6:53 PM

mojo,

Thanks for your kind words. I was being truthful and Murray serving 29% first serves in the second set, says it all. That's not him. However, I believe in being respectful towards a player's fans when he has a bad loss like this one. I found myself shaking my head as I watched it.

I expect Murray to practice hard and do his best to get into good form again. I also think that the comments about his Mom are really unfortunate. This woman loves her son and has given him her support and encouragement. What's going on has nothing to do with her. I try to just keep it about the players and keep the family off limits.
