Richard Gasquet and Philipp Kohlschreiber will open their Canadian Open bids in a jam-packed day of talent at the Canadian Open.
Richard Gasquet (10) vs. Florian Mayer
France’s Richard Gasquet has had a full-blown tennis resurgence this year. The Frenchman has slowly been climbing back up the rankings and now sits at 13 in the world, after falling to 86 in the world last March.
Gasquet has put up solid results in most of the Masters events this year, and he has a pair of round of 16 showings at the French Open and Wimbledon.
Florian Mayer is ranked 23 in the world, an impressive feat for the 27 year-old German. The bad news for Mayer is that the two men just played against each other in Davis Cup just weeks ago. Gasquet won the hard-fought 5-setter.
Prediction – Montreal is generally a good surface for the Frenchman. Gasquet in 3.
Philipp Kohlschreiber vs. Sergiy Stakhovsky
Germany’s Philipp Kohlschreiber and Sergiy Stakhovsky of the Ukraine are as close in ranking as it is possible to be. Kohlschreiber sits at No. 42 and Stakhovsky is one spot behind him at No. 43.
The two men have never met in an ATP match. Neither is having a particularly impressive year, but Kohlschreiber has had better success recently than has Stakhovsky. The Ukrainian hasn’t won more than 1 match at a time in the last 6 tournaments.
Prediction – Kohlschreiber for the win.
