  • Gulbis and Ferrero headline action on day 1 in Montreal

    8/8/11 2:55 AM | Cheryl Murray
Gulbis and Ferrero headline action on day 1 in Montreal Ernests Gulbis and Juan Carlos Ferrero, both of whom come into Montreal with titles to their names, will headline Monday play at the Montrel Masters.

Two weeks ago, Latvia’s Ernests Gulbis was ranked 84 in the world and had lost in 4 first rounds in a row – including Wimbledon and the French Open. Out of nowhere, the Latvian ran through the LA draw, defeating Xavier Malisse, Juan Martin Del Potro and Mardy Fish along the way. He now sits at 55 in the world.

Juan Carlos Ferrero also added a surprising title to his trophy collection this year. The Spanish veteran still sits outside the top 100 (104), but he surged to the title in Stuttgart last month, though that was on Ferrero’s preferred clay.

Gulbis and Ferrero have only met once before, way back in 2007. Ferrero won that encounter easily, but that meeting was 4 years ago on a clay court.

The Latvian is the better hard-court player at the moment, but he is one of the most unpredictable players on the men’s tour. He can in turns be brilliant, as he was in LA or awful like at Wimbledon.

Prediction – Gulbis in three for the win.
