Veteran Radek Stepanek and top seed Gael Monfils will take the court on final Sunday in Washington DC. The winner will add 500 ranking points to his total.
Frenchman Gael Monfils has a number of things favoring him going into this final match against Radek Stepanek. First, the Frenchman has been playing fantastic tennis this week, particularly in his quarterfinal match against Janko Tipsarevic.
Next, Monfils holds a 5-2 winning record over Stepanek. The two men last met just a few weeks ago in Hamburg, where Monfils won 6-4, 6-4. In reality, Stepanek has only won 1 legitimate match against Monfils last year in Brisbane. His other came on a Monfils retirement back in 2007.
Stepanek’s game doesn’t match up well against Monfils’s. The Frenchman’s athleticism and retrieving ability makes playing a successful aggressive game against him difficult. Monfils for the title in 3 sets.

Yeah, these older guys can do well at 250 and 500 events because the big cats are away and also perhaps because these events are best of three.

Wow I really thought Stepanek was done. Big win of a 500 point event for a guy who is 32. Guess older guys still have something left in the tank.
