American Donald Young has made his first-ever breakthrough to the final weekend of an ATP tournament. He will take on wily Czech veteran Radek Stepanek.
Few players in today’s game can boast the kind of variety that marks Radek Stepanek’s play. The Czech is one of the last of a dying breed; he prefers to play a highly-aggressive game which includes frequent forays into net.
The Czech’s ranking has dropped to 54 in the world, but he is still experienced in match play and he certainly knows how to handle the pressure of the latter stages of a tournament. The same cannot be said for Donald Young.
Young has had a well-documented struggle since moving up from juniors to the main ATP tour. The American has had some success on the Challenger tour, but his efforts in the pros have been marked mostly by a series of early round losses – until this week.
Young has had some luck on his side this week. The main seed in his section, Jurgen Melzer, had to withdraw in the middle of their match and Marcos Baghdatis was off-form.
The semifinal showing for Young – especially in a 500 level tournament – is a great result, but Stepanek is likely to have too much game and on-court acumen for the American.
