Top seed Gael Monfils will take on No. 6 Janko Tipsarevic and John Isner will take the court against Viktor Troicki on Friday in Washington.
Gael Monfils (1) vs. Janko Tipsarevic (6)
France’s Gael Monfils and Janko Tipsarevic of Serbia are no strangers to each other on the court. This quarterfinal showdown will mark their 6th career meeting. Monfils has a slight 3-2 edge over Tipsarevic, but he won their last encounter in straight sets during the 2010 Davis Cup final held in Serbia.
Tipsarevic had a good showing at Eastbourne, but he lost in the first round of Wimbledon and the second round in Hamburg. Monfils made a run to the quarters in Hamburg and appears to be playing better than his Serb opponent. Both men put in double duty on Thursday, so neither will have the advantage of being better rested.
Prediction – Monfils in 3.
John Isner (11) vs. Viktor Troicki (3)
American John Isner will be the clear crowd favorite in this quarterfinal matchup against Serbia’s Viktor Troicki. That’s the good news; the bad news is that Isner hasn’t managed to beat Troicki in 2 tries. The Serb has victories over Isner in Bangkok in 2009 and again in Davis Cup in 2010.
Isner has generally been serving well this week, but a 6-1 set against good friend James Blake will be of concern to the American’s camp. Troicki has a solid enough serve that he should be able to hold off Isner on the return. The match will come down to how well the American serves on the day.
Prediction – despite crowd support, Troicki should win this in 3.
