Friday is quarterfinal day at the Legg Mason Tennis Classic, with 2010 finalist Marcos Baghdatis and Spain’s Fernando Verdasco in the hunt for semifinal berths.
Marcos Baghdatis (7) vs. Donald Young
To say that Donald Young has struggled since turning pro would be an understatement. The American, who was once thought to be the likely successor to Andy Roddick’s reign as top US player, has amassed a 19 and 53 record on the ATP tour (not counting his results in Washington). Things have been looking up for Young, however.
The American played an injured Jurgen Melzer in round 2 and an aging Michael Russell in the third round to earn his spot in the quarterfinals. There, he will meet popular Cypriot Marcos Baghdatis, who made the finals in Washington last year.
While Young has played far better than he normally does, Baghdatis is a different level player than the hobbled Melzer or Michael Russell. The Cypriot is a quality hardcourt player, though he lost in the second round of LA to Yen-Hsun Lu.
Prediction – Baghdatis in 3.
Fernando Verdasco (5) vs. Radek Stepanek
This quarterfinal match-up comes directly on the heels of an epic Wimbledon encounter between Verdasco and Stepanek. The two men played a lengthy 5-set match at the All-England Club in which Verdasco came back from 2 sets to 0 down to steal victory from Stepanek’s grasp.
Stepanek and Verdasco have split wins in their lifetime meetings at 3 each, but Verdasco has won the last 3. This match could be the fight of the tournament so far if both players show up with their best stuff. Stepanek is an old-school volleyer and Verdasco a firm baseliner.
Prediction – Verdasco for the 3-set victory.
