2010 finalist Marcos Baghdatis will begin his 2011 Washington bid against India’s Somdev Devvarman, while veteran Tommy Haas takes on Thomaz Bellucci.
Marcos Baghdatis (7) vs. Somdev Devvarman
Somdev Devvarman has already posted a win over No. 7 seed Marcos Baghdatis this year. The two men met on the hard courts of Indian Wells, where Devvarman posted a 7-5, 6-0 win. The good news for Baghdatis is that Devvarman hasn’t been in particularly good form most of the year. He had a quarterfinal showing in Atlanta, but he lost in the first round in LA.
Baghdatis tried his hand in LA also, with the similar results. He also lost his first match. The Cypriot has proven that he plays well in DC, but he could have a real fight on his hands from Devvarman.
Prediction – Devvarman in 3.
Tommy Haas vs. Thomaz Bellucci (12)
Former world No. 3 Tommy Haas made a positive step toward his comeback attempt with a win over Amer Delic in the first round. The German is ranked 576 in the world due to a long injury layoff.
The veteran will take on young Brazilian Thomaz Bellucci in his second round match. Bellucci is ranked 36 in the world. He is largely a clay court player, but at 23, 10 years Haas’s junior, he is likely to have enough game to handle the still-rusty German.
Prediction – Bellucci in straight sets.
