Germany’s Tommy Haas and hard-hitting Chilean Fernando Gonzalez fight for a spot in the Legg Mason Tennis Classic second round.
Tommy Haas vs. Fernando Gonzalez
This first round match between two former top-ten players should delight fans. Both Tommy Haas of Germany and Fernando Gonzalez have had many troubles with injuries. Haas’s ranking sits at 576 in the world, due mostly to the fact that he spent nearly the entire 2010 season sidelined. Gonzalez position at No. 297 is better; the Chilean made the choice to build his ranking playing on the Challenger circuit.
Haas hasn’t had much luck against Gonzalez on court. The German lost 4 of 5 matches that the two men played between 2004 and 2009. Expect a similar result in Washington.
Jarkko Nieminen vs. Igor Kunitsyn
Finland’s Jarkko Nieminen, ranked 51 in the world, will take on Igor Kunitsyn of Russian. The two men have never met on the ATP tour.
The Finn comes into Washington off a stint on the European clay, where he enjoyed moderate success with a third round showing in Hamburg. Kunitsyn instead chose to come right over to the States after Wimbledon, putting in a showing in Newport and Atlanta, where he lost in the first round. He fared better in LA. The Russian posted good wins over Fernando Gonzalez and Ryan Sweeting before going down to eventual finalist Mardy Fish.
With recent travel and possible hard court rust to deal with, Nieminen will go into this match with some work to do. Kunitsyn in 3.
