American James Blake will take on the oft-injured Argentine David Nalbandian in the Washington second round.
James Blake vs. David Nalbandian (8)
Both James Blake and David Nalbandian have had struggles with injury over the past year. Blake battled a sidelining and possible career-ending knee injury last year and illness kept Nalbandian out this spring.
The Argentine comes into Washington as the defending champion; he defeated popular Cypriot Marcos Baghdatis in the final last year. Blake and Nalbandian have surprisingly only played once in their long careers, back in 2006, which Blake won.
Blake is playing quite well, actually. The American will have chances in this match if he can neutralize Nalbandian’s backhand. Still, the speedy surface will suit Nalbandian’s game nicely. The Argentine for the win, but Blake should make this entertaining.
John Isner (11) vs. Tobias Kamke
American John Isner beat Tobias Kamke of Germany a few weeks ago on the grass courts of Newport. Isner went on to win that event, his first of the season and second in his career.
The American should be well-positioned to repeat that result in Washington. The conditions are fast and the ball stays low, both of which will make Isner’s rocket serve almost impossible to return.
Kamke’s best result of the year by far was his semifinal showing in Newport. Otherwise the German has struggled, with his ranking just this week dropping 7 spots to No. 94 in the world. Expect Isner to come out on top in this showdown.
