Russian Mikhail Youzhny will take on Marcel Granollers, while top seed Almagro faces down countryman Fernando Verdasco.
Mikhail Youzhny (3) vs. Marcel Granollers (8)
The seeds held up well in Gstaad this week, with 3 of the top 4 in the semifinals. Unfortunately for the crowd, the only Swiss left in the draw, Stanislas Wawrinka, was knocked out in the quarters by Marcel Granollers.
The Spaniard will take on No. 3 seed Mikhail Youzhny from Russia. Youzhny and Granollers have already played twice in 2011, with Youzhny winning both in straight sets. The Russian’s path to the semis included wins over Denis Istomin and Andreas Haider-Maurer. Granollers, who prefers playing on clay, is capable of offering resistance, but Youzhny should get through to the final.
Nicolas Almagro (1) vs. Fernando Verdasco (4)
This semifinal encounter will mark the sixth meeting between countrymen Nicolas Almagro and Fernando Verdasco. Until this season they’ve only played one time per year, but they met up just last week in Hamburg, a match won in easy straight sets by Almagro.
The top seed is playing the better tennis at the moment. Almagro has been on a good run in this last European clay court swing. He made the semis in Bastad and the finals in Hamburg. He has 3 titles on the year, compared to none for Verdasco.
Expect Verdasco to make more of a match of it than he did in his 6-4, 6-1 defeat last week, but Almagro should advance.
