(1) Mardy Fish vs. (8) Igor Kunitsyn
World No. 9 Mardy Fish trails opponent Igor Kunitsyn 1-2 in the series, entering into the quarterfinal. The players last met three years ago in Austria, where the Russian scored a first-round victory in straight sets.
Fish made the quarterfinal by virtue of his 7-6(1), 6-1 ousting of Gilles Muller late Thursday. The 29-year-old American is bidding for his fifth hard-court semifinal this season.
World No. 60 Igor Kunitsyn defeated American Ryan Harrison in the round of 16, 7-6(4), 7-6(6). The 29-year-old Russian looks to reach his first Tour-level semi since June, when he advanced to the final four in Eastbourne.
(2) Juan Martin Del Potro vs. Ernests Gulbis
Second seed Juan Martin Del Potro leads Ernests Gulbis 3-0 in the series, having won all three matches on hard-court.
Del Potro passed into the quarterfinal after taking out veteran James Blake in straight sets. The 22-year-old Argentine will attempt to make his first semifinal since early May, when he put together a title-winning run in Estoril.
World No. 84 Gulbis dismissed American qualifier Daniel Kosakowski in round two. The 22-year-old Latvian looks to win three consecutive matches for the first time this year.
