No. 2 seed Stanislas Wawrinka and No. 3 seed Mikhail Youzhny will make their debut in Gstaad on Wednesday.
Stanislas Wawrinka (2) vs. Peter Luczak
Switzerland’s own Stanislas Wawrinka will ease into his home country tournament against veteran Australian Peter Luczak, ranked 248 in the world. In this, the twilight of his career, Luczak spends much of his playing time on the Challenger circuit or else qualifying for main tour events.
Wawrinka, who sits at No. 17, has not had a particularly impressive season. The Swiss had a nice result at Roland Garros, where he made the round of 16, but he underperformed for the rest of the spring season, including a second-round loss at Wimbledon. The good news for Wawrinka is that even struggling with his form, he is still several levels above Luczak. The Swiss in straight sets.
Mikhail Youzhny (3) vs. Denis Istomin
Life will not be as simple for Mikhail Youzhny as it should be for Wawrinka. The Russian world No. 14 will take on Uzbekistan’s Denis Istomin, a man to whom Youzhny lost the only other time they’ve played. Istomin defeated Youzhny in the 2009 edition of St. Petersburg, with Youzhny retiring at the start of the second set after losing the first 6-2.
The Russian has been playing well, with a good semifinal showing last week in Hamburg and a fourth round exit at Wimbledon. Istomin has struggled this season. The Uzbekistani is ranked 80 in the world and has been struggling to win matches this season. Prediction – Youzhny for the win in 3.
